Stellar 250 | A Steam Machine with a AMD BC250

The Stella 250 is a custom console built around the AMD BC-250 APU. My main goal with this project was to make it look and feel like a legitimate retail console rather than a typical DIY PC build. I prioritized keeping everything internal to achieve a clean, professional look.

The system features 2.2TB of internal storage and built-in WiFi 6, so there are no external drives or dongles cluttering the setup. I also integrated a dedicated display into the chassis for real-time temperature monitoring to keep an eye on performance during heavy sessions. It is a fully self-contained machine designed for a seamless gaming experience. I am starting to document the entire process and technical details at https://github.com/isaacalvex/AMD-BC-250-Project-Guide.

Switch emulation

Hello, I've searched here and YT but I don't seem to find this, how is the switch emulation on this machine? Games like astral chain, Xenoblades, breath of the wild, totk, Metroid prime 4? Has anyone here tested and if so what is the performance like

Cooling Guidance needed

Hey all. Looking to beef up cooling on my BC250. Currently have a 120mm Antec Nova mounted on top of opened HS fins and a cheapo 240mn at the bottom for vram.

I am looking at going for a PC type cooler but not sure where to start.

  1. What type of mountings are available? Can I get from a store or must they be custom 3d printed?

  2. Can I use Intel based or only AMD based coolers?

  3. What about vrms etc? I have seem someone cut the stock cooler to leave the edges on for those and PC cooling on the CPU.

Is there perhaps a video or guide available to assist with this ?

Looking to sell, in the US. I get very good shipping rates so willing to ship. 1tb m.2 Looking for $300

Bios modded, 3D printed case, 500w apevia power supply, ARGB fan, 1tb m.2 gen 3. Great temps, never OC.

Only real downside is I don’t have a switch wired, so I got a on/off extension cord with a foot switch on Amazon for $6 so I don’t have to unplug it everytime.

Looking for $300 figured id ask yall before i send to the wolves on Craigslist.

How much did your build cost?

Curious what people are spending on their builds, I priced one out and it's coming to $500cad, which is way more than I initially expected. (please include the year since hardware prices have gotten crazy recently).

PSU Adapters back in stock + 3D Models + Updates

Hi everyone! A few updates on my adapter project.
In case you missed: Post 1 Post 2 Post 3

  1. 2nd batch is live! Thanks to everyone who pre-ordered - your boards have already shipped! Both the FSP500 plug-and-play and Lite versions are back in stock and available at mosfet.party.
  2. GitHub is up - wiring diagrams and 3D models for both adapters are now on my GitHub. Feedback welcome!
  3. Case designers - if you're designing a BC250 enclosure and want to add support for my adapters, you can find the board 3D models and example button/panel templates for the FSP500 adapter on my GitHub. Reach out to me and I'll print and verify compatibility and add your design to the supported enclosures list on GitHub and my website.
  4. 24-pin plug-and-play version - I finally cracked it. I wasn't happy with a board sporting a massive connector, so I went with a сable-mounted connector instead. More details coming soon!

Hi

I’m currently building a Steam Machine based on a BC250, and I have a question about the power supply.

I was thinking about going with a SilverStone FX350-G (350W Flex ATX), but I’m not sure if it will provide enough headroom.

The plan is to do a bit of overclocking on the BC250, while also powering an AIO (pump + fans).

I’ve seen some people using a Mean Well LRS-350 for similar builds, so I’m wondering if a 350W PSU like the SilverStone would be enough, or if it might be too close to the limit under load.

Thanks in advance for your feedback

Hey everyone,

after several weeks (more months) of modeling, test-printing, cursing at failed prints, and tweaking some details, I almost "finished" my custom case for the BC250 board! I wanted something super clean and minimalist that still feels like a proper little PC you can actually treat like a desktop. Also i wanted a SFX PSU, because of Noise Reasons, and Heat Reduction.

Here’s what I built in:

  • Almost all panels are held on with strong magnets for super easy access
  • Integrated USB hub inside
  • u/iamdarkyoshi’s PSU Switch Mod fully implemented so the whole thing can shut down and boot like a normal PC (no more PSU power off)
  • I modded the board itself to tap the power/LED pinouts directly so everything works cleanly
  • Full SFX PSU compatibility
  • Very minimalist overall look with a transparent side bar that I still want to light up with an LED strip (planning to finish that this week). So it turns on, instead of the Built In Power LED. I clipped both off, Power and Reset LED.
  • Removed Stock Heatsink and added Thermalrigh AXP120 + Noctua 120mm Fan and a Front 90mm Fan
  • NVME Cooler, and Added Heatsinks on VRMS etc.

The whole project took way more time and nerves than I expected, but I’m really happy with how it turned out. I’ll post some better photos and maybe a build video once it’s 100% done.

I Also think that the Stock Cooler should fit, but as i dont have it anymore i could not test properly. Also the iamdarkyoshi Mod is not necessary, also the Power LED/Switch stuff.

I’m about to publish the files when im finished. I'll probably just drop them for free on MakerWorld to get atleast some boost or so, or maybe it would make sense to also set up a Ko-fi (or similar) so people who really like it can throw a coffee my way?

But lets see.

Would love some Feedback.

I was wondering this today after reading and seeing many posts.

Instead of hacking up the existing heatsink, why don't more people just remove it and install an AMD CPU cooler mount and AMD CPU cooler?

I figured it would cost around $100 to make the change. I don't have a 3D printer but there are eBay stores selling AMD CPU cooler mounts for LGA 1700, LGA 1851, AM4, and AM5 socket CPUs for around $30CAD shipped. Then a Noctua low profile cooler for an AM4 socket is $50CAD, and just buy some mini heatsinks and/or spreaders for the other components on the top of the board which will be another $10-20CAD.

I know $100 is a lot to some people so hacking up the heatsink to install a $20-30 fan makes more sense but why aren't there more people swapping out the heatsink for a proper CPU cooler if a slight bump in cost isn't an issue?

I'm just curious because I see a lot people peeling the top of the stock heatsink to get proper airflow through to the board. Would the thermals improve if the heatsink was swapped out for something potentially better? I'm eyeing a Noctua Premium Low Profile cooler (NH-L9a-AM4) and a mini heatsink kit.

Thoughts?

Cachyos vs bazzite on bc250

There's probably alot of video reviews and what not out there.

I tested eldenring on both, running cyan skillfish governor and at 3.5ghz

Bazzite - Barely hits 60fps usually 45-60, not really smooth.

Cachyos - Stable and doesn't dip below 60fps, I get 75fps when I changed monitors refresh rate.

Meanwell LOP-300 fan

I'm trying to build a silent machine. The Noctua fans for the main board are good but i bought a small fan for the PSU and it is extremely loud.

I power then fan with the PSU so it's always at max speed. Should i get a PWM fan and monitor the PSU temperature ? Is the fan absolutely necessary ?

Crashed while playing a game, now no post

Love my first BC250 so much I decided to build another one. I’ve been playing games on it for the last day. Temps were great, in the mid 60s at 2200mhz.

Then screen lost signal, fans go full blast and that’s all I get now. I removed the battery for 5 min, swapped the CMOS jumper, unplugged everything, etc.

Removed the SSD and it doesn’t load the bios, keyboard won’t load the bios. When it powers on just 100% fan and nothing else. Now when powering on both LEDs are solid red, no flashing.

Anyone experience something similar? Can the BIOS corrupt randomly? And if so, can a hardware programmer reflashing make any difference?

Mini ATX chillin

What is the best RAM split? 512 seems a bit lethargic and I get occasional stuttering. Thanks in advance.

Hello all,

As above, just about to order a BC-250 to run Steam on and would like to use an external GPU by also picking up a ADT-UT3G dock and my friend is selling a RX 6800 XT on the cheap so would want use that ideally. Will also pick up a load of fans and design a case and lastly a more powerful PSU to cover the external GPU. Already have a load of M.2 cards up to 2 T.B and then can pop others in my Unraid home server using Lancache in a Docker so I can redownload games from Unraid.

Just wondering if anyone else if using an external GPU? Either the same as above or just a RX 6800, Nvidia 4060, 4070 Super or 4070 Ti?

Many thanks.

What are the heatsink sizes for the front of the board? I'm thinking about changing my cooling to either a water cooler or getting a reg cpu cooler, but before I do so I'm curious about the sizes and quantity of the sizes of heatsinks to go along with it so that other components don't overheat? I've done some research but couldn't find an exact answer and I'd rather not waste money on things I don't need nor not have enough when I go to do the job. TIA!
