[Little bell tinkles as he opens the door. Cafe sounds]

Nice, this place is pretty quiet.

You could easily be a hallucination brought on by dehydration, starvation, and stress.”

(Pause)

She even has the same eye color as my character.

“No, I’m fine, I am totally fine. You just really do look like her.”

(Pause)

“You’re not her.”

(Pause)

“No, you’re not. She has, ok yes the same hair and eyes, the same smile, the same everything, but it's impossible. No, it’s insane!”

“I just can’t make myself believe that you’re my main character.”

“Wait, that’s from my book. Your dialogue.”

“Yeah, you did say that about your, your crush. That he gives every love song you hear meaning and no book or movie love could ever match how you feel about him. He quiets your mind even when it’s the loudest. Ok, I suppose I have no choice but to believe you.”

“So, how are you here, book girl?”

“You don’t know? You felt me walking away and you had to stop me? Why?”

“To come back and finish writing the last chapter? Look, I wish I could, but I, I have a bit of writer’s block. I was hoping to clear my head and get some inspiration to finish.”

“No, it doesn’t seem to be helping yet. Although you are definitely a major distraction.”

“No, I can't just write an ending. You don’t get to choose your ending, it has to flow naturally with what came before it. Not to say you aren’t a great person, you’re just, not there yet.”

“I may know something about your situation.”

“Yeah, we talk a lot. She recommended some books for me and I may have given her a few chapters of my book to read, but she never got back with me. She either hates them or she realized the book is about her and I creeped her out! Damn it, I’m such an idiot!” 

(Pause)

“Oh please, you’re a barely fictionalized female version of me. I know you know how I feel. I mean hell, even your name is a play off of mine. It’s hopeless.”

(Pause)

“Hey stop shouting someone will… huh, can anyone else see or hear you? Or am I talking to air to someone watching me?”

“Yep, definitely looks like I’m talking to myself based on the look the barista is giving me. Come on. Let’s, go for a walk or something.”

“Well, I guess both if I’m honest. Her looks, my actions I suppose.”

“That damn smile. Even without it really being her makes my heart pound.”

I hate that they are both staring at me expectedly. When did book girl even appear? 

“I’m not exactly sure yet. I think I need to develop the character a bit more before she has the courage to ask him out or maybe she just won’t. I mean that is a very realistic ending.”

(Pause)

No, please don’t look so disappointed. I know it hurts, but…

(Pause)

“Huh? What if he asks her out?”

(Pause)

“I mean, it’s not a bad idea, I just thought…”

“The realistic ending is true, but sometimes you just need a nudge?”

[Speaker starts , her tone slightly frustrated ]

“I’m not trying to start anything. I just asked a question. One simple question.”

“Well yeah , You were so snappy with me over it .”

[Speaker exhales deeply]

“No , it is that deep for me though. You didn’t see the way they looked at me .”

[She sighs sadly]

But it really kept nagging at me and nagging at me only because I KNOW these are your closest friends. You talk about them all the time, you hang out together … all the things. So it felt a little humiliating to assume that they heard of me only to be stared at and then when I introduced myself nothing clicked for them. It didn't help that you wanted me outta there the moment you came and saw me with them.”

“I’m not stupid, I know when people have no clue what’s going on. I saw it on their faces. I saw the way they tried to pretend and save the moment. They had no idea.”

“No, because it made sense why you didn’t want me to get there before you, why you wanted us to go in together.”

You go over to hang out with your best friend after a long day and you just want to relax. You adore him. He’s a sweet guy, who has always been by your side. You just wish he felt the same way about you. He’s happy to see you and he also coincidentally has a surprise for you.

“Hey, what’s up? I didn’t know you were coming by today.”

{Pause}

“Yeah, sure I’m down for hanging out for a while. Is everything ok?”

{Pause}

“Good. Did you have something in mind to do?”

{Pause}

“Just hanging out sounds cool. Come on in.”

{Pause}

“Oh hey this is perfect timing. I actually got you something today.”

{Pause}

“Yeah. Here, come into the kitchen. I went to the bookstore today just to look around and right when I went in the door, I found… this. Here.”

{Pause}

“That is from the series you’ve been reading right? You’ve been waiting for the next book to come out.”

{Pause}

“Ok wow, that squeal was so loud I think I can hear my neighbor’s dog, Carter, barking. I take it you like it.”

{Pause}

“Oh good, I was hoping it was the series and that it was the newest book. Apparently, it just came out today.”

{Pause}

“Warmly Aww, you’re welcome and thank you for only bruising maybe one rib with this hug unlike last time when I swear you fractured a few of them when you tackle hugged me.”

{Pause}

“I know that look. Do you want to go home and start reading it?”

{Pause}

“No? Yeah, I don’t believe that face. You are way too excited. Ok, three options. Either you can go home and read, you can stay and we can hang out and do something, or I also got a book for myself when I was there, so we could just sit and read our own things on my couch.”

{Pause}

“Sweet, that is the one I hoped you’d pick. Come on, help me gather some snacks and we can just sit and read.”

{Pause}

“There we go. Here, you can have the blanket over the back of the couch, I can grab another from the closet.”

{Pause}

“Oh, you sure?”

{Pause}

“Ok, we can share it. Umm, music or no music?”

{Pause}

“Quiet music with no words? You got it. I have a good playlist to read to. It has a bunch of instrumental music.”

“Ok, no music it is. Got it.”

“So, how’s the book? It’s been about an hour. Are you hooked?”

{Pause}

“Good, I’m glad you’re liking it so far.”

{Pause}

“Mine is really good too.”

{Pause}

“Umm maybe. You might like it. It’s fantasy and you love that. Friends to lovers type I think, which I know you love. Although, ok. This story is supposed to be about a prince who has to marry a princess, but he’s in love with the woman who is a castle guard. The guard and he have grown up together as friends. I think the guard likes him, I’m pretty sure, but of course you know how I am with that. I don’t really pick up on people’s feelings well.”

{Pause}

“Exactly, when Rachel was flirting with me our junior year I had no clue.”

{Pause}

“I’m not hopeless. Mean.” 

{Pause}

“I’m kidding, you’re not mean. Although as my best friend, you are the only one allowed to make fun because I know you love me.”

{Pause}

“Uh, hello? Hey, you good?”

{Pause}

“Why? Because you just froze and went white as snow.”

“Slowish Are, you, sure? 

{Pause}

“Oook. Anyway, yeah. When I was looking up this book, I read something about them faking the prince’s death so he and the knight could run away together. So I’m really looking forward to seeing how that plays out. Luckily I haven’t read any major spoilers, but I’m really hoping for at least a decent ending.”

{Pause}

“You think it sounds like one that would have a happy ending? I hope so. What about yours? I know it's like the third in the series, but what is it about?”

{Pause}

“Huh, that sounds interesting. So it’s the third in the series, but each of the books has focused on a different couple?”

{Pause}

“That’s actually kind of creative. Get to have the newness of a new couple, but still have the established atmosphere surrounding the new couple. I like that.”

{Pause}

“The books have been strangers to lovers in the first, enemies to lovers in the second, and so far, strained strangers to lovers. That’s confusing.”

{Pause}

“Me? If I had to choose a trope, hmm I’d probably choose friends to lovers. I like them having a stable environment.”

{Pause}

“Boring it may sound, but in real life, I don’t ever want to be enemies with my lover. I would want my girlfriend to be my best friend. Like, ok I’m only going to use us as a hypothetical example. If we were to start dating, I’d like that we already have an established relationship. We know nearly everything about each other. I know everything I like about you and the things we don’t agree on. None of it would be new because we went through the awkward part without having to go through an awkward time.”

{Pause}

“What do you mean if only it were that simple?” 

{Pause}

“Friends to lovers have to deal with and figure out the messy confession. What messy confession?”

{Pause}

“I mean yeah, that can, be the worst. Not knowing if your friend likes you, not wanting to ruin the friendship. Fine, yes, I can understand that, but man, what if they do like you? What if it’s not ruining the friendship, but making it stronger? Fear is powerful, but shouldn’t love always be stronger than fear? I’m not really one to talk, but that’s how I feel.”

{Pause}

“Yeah, I get that, but…”

{Pause}

“That’s a good point, but…”

{Pause}

“I, wait, what?”

{Pause}

“No, stop, stop. What did you just say?” 

{Pause}

“No, before that.”

{Pause}

“Come on after that.”

{Pause}

“You know what I’m talking about. I can see your face going red and looking like you’re about to…”

[She gets up and starts to leave and he jumps up and wraps his arms around her stomach and lifts her off the ground, just holding her]

“No, you don’t. Come back here right now.” 

{Pause}

“I’ll put you down, I promise, just tell me what you said, please.”

{Pause}

“I’m just holding you. Stop trying to kick me.”

{Pause}

“No, I’ll not putting you on the ground until you tell me.”

{Pause}

“Stop moving, you’re going to throw me off bal (balance)... Whoa!”

[He lands on the ground, but keeps her secure in his arms]

“Are you ok?” 

{Pause}

“Good.”

{Pause}

“Yeah, I’m fine. My ass might be sore tomorrow from the fall, but I’ll be ok.”

He speaks very soft and intimate from here on.

“Yes. I’m wrapping my arms around you completely.”

{Pause}

“You like this. I felt you melt into me a bit.”

{Pause}

“It’s ok. I like it too.”

{Pause}

“Please, my best friend, my person, the person I care about most in this world, the love of my life, say what you said again.”

{Pause}

“I love you too.”

{Pause}

“Mmh. For a long time now. I never dreamed you felt the same. I was just, to scared.”

{Pause}

“You too? That’s ok. I’m glad you said it, even if it was an accident.” 

{Pause}

“I’m going to unwrap my arms from around you.”

{Pause}

“Why? So, you can turn over and face me.”

{Pause}

“Thank you. Let’s tuck this lock of hair behind your ear. There you are. You are absolutely gorgeous in general and especially in my arms.”

{Pause}

“You are most definitely my person, my girl.”

{Pause}

“I’m yours too? Good.”

{Pause}

“May I ask you something? You can say no.”

{Pause}

“Very soft Can I kiss you?”

{Pause}

“Yeah? I’m about to kiss my best friend.”

{Pause}

“And I’m about to do it again.”

{Pause}

“You’re incredible.”

[He kiss her where the commas are]

“Perfect, wonderful, wicked smart, and fantastically beautiful.”

“And I have learned something new.”

“I love making you turn red like this. So cute. So precious. So mine.”

“I’m so glad you feel the same way. I also have another confession.”

{Pause}

“The book I got you, I knew it was coming out today. I wanted to get it for you.”

[She kisses him and he laughs through it.]

“Aww You’re welcome, angel… Oh. um is that ok?”

“I’m going to say yes because of that blush.”

“You’re so cute. I love you, angel.”
