Back in Time Gaming OFFICIALLY COMING TO ATHENS

Just wanted to post here and say thank you to the literal hundred plus DMs I’ve gotten over the past 3-4 months about my store. For real, the love has been OVERWHELMING. I can’t wait to officially get this place open.

For the curious, it will be located at 1055 Gaines’s School rd, Suite 110. the Aldi shopping center on East side. Between T-Mobile and HR Block.

Soft opening will be May the 4th, (cause Star Wars, duh) and then the official grand opening will be May 23rd.

We buy sell trade everything from old school NES to PS5, we do console and game repairs with sometimes same day turnaround and guaranteed lowest price around.

Doug McKillip- you ok, fella?

Athenian Doug McKillip is running for state Senate. He has a huge billboard out on 78 proclaiming himself Democrats' worst enemy. It features a rifle scope view of Stacey Abrams. Those of us who have been around the block a time or two might recall that Doug the flip-flopper identified as a true-blue Democrat till sometime in the 2010s. Why so mad, Doug?

Slater’s is closing/was sold.

The Slaters always seemed stretched thin with so many restaurants and ventures open in Athens (and with Dovetail opening soon), so I guess this isn’t so surprising, but still a bummer! Here’s hoping whatever comes next for the space is good!

How to find a homeless person in Athens?

I know this is a wild question, but I recently learned that a distant relative of mine may be part of the homeless population living in Athens (we know that she used to be the last time she spoke to her twin brother about a year ago) and she’s since gone silent/ phone turned off. Her siblings are worried about her and asked that since I live near the city, perhaps I could keep an eye out for her. Does anyone have any suggestions on a way to find out if she’s still in Athens/ anyone I could ask? TIA

ETA: is there something I could also search for Jane Doe’s needing to be identified?

Mayor FroYo

Athens used to be absolutely spoiled when it came to FroYo. We had the Beechwood TCBY back in the Stone Age, then Menchie’s rolled in like it was the second coming of frozen dairy.

Now? Crickets. Every single one of them has ghosted us.

At this point, I’d vote for literally any mayoral candidate (communist, libertarian, flat-earther, whatever) as long as their platform includes one sacred promise: Make Athens FroYo Again.

My ballot, my toppings. No further questions.

(Bonus points if Tim Denson wants to propose setting up municipally-funded FroYo stations for the masses. SPLOST-Yo?)

Our next Commissioner?

How excited are we that he might be one of our commissioners? (Yes, I know he lives in Barrow County and wouldn’t be eligible, but 2028 is a long time away)

Advice on potential move from Athens to Winterville

So I’m a middle aged politically left blue collar guy and I moved here a few years ago from a much bigger city for a slow down, and aside from finding a good job it’s just been a little hard. Hard to make friends at this age and hard to find a connection to the city doing everything alone and more smallest violin type of stuff.

I am thinking of just embracing the aloneness but with more house and yard (for dogs and a garden) for my dollar as I live in a yard less duplex and can’t really afford a whole lot more than the standard 1200 rent.

Anyway now that you have my life story I was wondering if winterville might be a better place for me and if anyone has anything good or bad to say about changing scenery given my situation.

Thanks!

2x PSA: Yield to Pedestrians and New Firefly Extension Functionally Complete

I know it's asking a lot, but the law clearly states vehicles must yield to pedestrians approaching and present on sidewalks and crosswalks. A lot of Athens drivers struggle with this, unfortunately.

In positive news, the new Firefly Extension that runs along Spring Valley Road is functionally complete. They still have some things they're working on, so I wouldn't venture out during the week, but all the barriers are down and it's a great addition. Still wish we could see more water fountains!

Trying to remember a store in Georgia Square mall

So I’m 45 and I’m from Athens. I spent a lot of my time in Georgia Square Mall. There was an apparel store upstairs that I shopped at often as a teen (like 1994-2000). It was either next to or very close to the Chinese restaurant that was up there (I ate there more times than I’d like to admit). I can’t for the life of me remember the name. Can anyone help me? Thanks!

Whatever geniuses decided G-Day and Twilight should be on the same day should be tarred and feathered

I’m about to go in for a 5 hour shift, I make 10 dollars an hour and parking is going to be at least 20 dollars if I can find any at all. Not to mention the number of people I am going to have to serve effectively by my self… someone make it make sense
