Mortars are underutilized

Let’s start with two reasons I’ve seen people mentioning for not using mortars:

  1. In order to use mortars, you need to reach a pretty high rank, which takes quite a lot of time, and even then, it costs quite a lot of supplies.
  2. It is not accurate enough, and the chance of getting kills with it is pretty low.

My perspective:

You are free to disagree with me, but I think the way supplies and ranks are being handled is very flawed. I understand that in order to get balance, there have to be compromises. I will not act like I have some kind of magic solution. But people on this sub always say to me, "think of arma less as a game, and more as a battle simulation." Well, artillery, which mortars are included as part of, is an integral part of battle. Saying you do not have artillery in a real life scenario is a really crippling issue and a huge disadvantage.

I am not american, so I do not know what the american doctrine is. But where I am from, we have something called "softening the target". You do not engage a point of contention without artillery softening it first, after it has been confirmed there are no civilians in the area.

So what do I suggest? I know it is a completely different game with completely different emphasis on different aspects. But in squad, they figured out how to balance artillery. It is effective, but it is not overpowered. It is intense, but it does not cause too many performance issues. In squad, you cannot win without artillery.

I am not suggesting that arma become squad, but I do want the game to take inspiration from the positive aspects of its counterpart and leave the negative aspects behind.

In the meantime, do you know of any EU servers where mortar enthusiasts have a place?

I like how in reforger we arent playing gritty bearded operators. This looks like a kid whos driving an LAV-25 before legally allowed to purchase beer.

On Official Server

7 hour build of an air strip base by the man known as K-offs.

6047 has an amazing community that I’ve been apart of for a few months now. Every now and again we make attempts at building some crazy stuff.

Today was one of those days.

New player first impressions

Hello everyone 🫡

Picked this game up the day before yesterday. Never played an Arma game before. Only Operation Flashpoint back in the day.

Booted up the game. The main menu music immediately welcomed me with appropriately heroic yet tragic music. It set the vibe perfectly. It was time for action but the things we need to do are sad at the same time.

Time for the training mode. I loved how it was put together. Nothing revolutionary but it sucked you right in. It was exciting to learn the very basics of each part of the game. Couldn’t put the game down before completing the whole training experience.

Coming from Operation Flashpoint, I already knew that you have to have patience with this game. All games are, in the end, games. But this game does have tons of milsim elements.

Next day I fired up my first Scenario. It was a 6-person co-op scenario where you play as FIA. I managed to identify that I was part of a squad. And that I could locate the squad leader on the map. Beyond that, the game doesn’t hold your hand. You need to rely on the map and compass. Read the terrain and structures. Absolutely fantastic.

Combined with the visuals and ambient sounds, the experience felt immersive immediately. I said to myself: “this is amazing”.

Training and Field Manual had taught me about using a radio. I carefully transmitted my location and where I was going for the first time. My squad leader answered to me immediately. I was encouraged to find my way to my squad.

This was not an easy task as the scenario took place in night time. I knew it was dangerous but I decided to have my flashlight on as I was making my way to my squad. I was blindly trusting that the game couldn’t be so brutal that there would be enemies immediately next to a spawn zone.

Eventually, around a click later, I arrived to the outskirts of a little town. I had seen that my squad leader had been stuck there this whole time. To his credit of course. Much better than the alternative.

He quickly advised me to turn off the flashlight. I already knew that I needed to be intentional and careful with the radio because the enemy will hear.

He had another new player with him. He also had the urge to use the flashlight because he could not see anything in the dark either.

What a fantastic atmosphere and situation. Darkness will challenge you but it is also your best friend in concealment.

I didn’t stay alive for very long. Would have never expected to feel such accomplishment for just running around and navigating in the dark. Finding my way to where I was planning to go. There are so many steps and layers to just surviving in this game. Let alone contributing to the team effort and overall scenario. Exciting!

Then it happened. As our squad leader continued to push us forward with the mission, we started chatting over the radio about other things as well. We went through the usual steps of small talk. Then we went a little deeper. By the time it was time to call it for the day, we tried to find a way to add each other somehow. Unfortunately, there wasn’t an easy way as we were playing on different platforms.

While we might not bump into each other again, this was an amazing introduction to the kind of camaraderie you can develop while playing this game. I’m happy to report that my next session didn’t fall short on this front either.

In short, I find this game immersive, challenging and social too. Of course the focus needs to be on the mission, but just like you would in a more real situation, you will make acquaintances, friends, along the way.

I warmly recommend the game to anyone who might be wondering if they should pick this game up. Version 1.7 is “just around the corner”. The playerbase is growing. And this Arma game is the one that will lead us to Arma 4. Can’t wait to enjoy this one more first.

Would deployable campsites for squad respawns work in HQC?

If Squads had the option to deploy an encampment that would enable squad based spawns, would this improve teamwork, cohesion, and allow more strategic and interesting gameplay?

I'd like to see more foot traffic, more fights over territorial gains rather than only bases, CPs and main roads or chokepoints.

I don't think this should work within a certain range of an enemy base, while also being in close range of a friendly base. So its not as easy and quick to spawn on an enemy base like a radio backpack, but it would be safer, more stealthy and slightly quicker than acquiring transport at a friendly FOB.

And unlike a radio backpack, an encampment is much larger and more noticable, probably requiring a vehicle with supplies or a large backpack and multiple squad members to deploy.

Alternative maps?

Are there any modern warfare (WCS) servers running maps other than Everon & Serhiivka?

I see many people talking about kolguyev, chernarus etc. The maps looks sick and im getting pretty tired of everon and serhiivka but i can't seem to find any EU servers running anything else. I know theres modded maps but i would like to try an official map.

Do yall know of any servers?

My beloved.

Gentlemen and friends of all creeds, backgrounds, and statuses. Once again I come to you, humbly on bended knee, will someone that knows how aid me in my quest for the glorious AAVP7A1? The LatinaLightning person was working on it but I believe they ran into an issue and stopped working on it. Is there anyone else willing to pick up the mantle and deliver us this glorious beast? My friends and I yearn for the asbestos boat tank in Arma.

There's no way this isn't bugged, right?

I literally just went to work for 6 hours and got home and I hadn't moved a single spot😂😂

Y'all got any servers where I can survive for longer than 30 seconds?

Pretty self-explanatory. I'm really new and I've no idea how to play, and I'm not learning much on official servers.

Anyone elses game take a little bit to load everything when they respawn?

Like when I spawn it will often take between 5 to 10 seconds or a little longer just to load everything. Like I have my gun but the rest of my loadout isn't spawned, and none of the players/items/vics around me pop in for this period. Its not to bad when spawning at MOB but fairly noticeable when spawning on forward points.

I have had this since the game came out so I figure its just due to network/game engine, but wondering if anyone else has the same?

Metro 2033 mod

I know arma has alot of servers with custom assets maps and wars, surprised no one made a metro 2033 one with the reds vs the 4th Reich. With a cool claustrophobic map

Where are the other supplies at Morton Harbor?

Last night I was trying to run supplies. I went to all 4 supply locations that I know of as highlighted on the map, they were all empty, but the map indicated there was still 1400 supplies.

Does anyone else know where I could find these additional supplies?

I'd really love if BI added an 'instructions' field to Mods in Reforger

As title says, I think it would be really great to have an extra field for instructions (separate from description).

I have about 10 mods that look fantastic, but have no documentation on how to use them. Even a really basic explanation would point me in a direction, but instead I will have to pour through youtube videos which takes a while.

It would be awesome to set the requirement of modding as to attach instructions. It seems like one of those UX tweaks that could help usability a lot. In software we have a readme file that always contains steps for installation, and I think we could benefit a lot from that

That's all I have to say - Thanks!

Directional fall after shot to dead?

Heyo! Quick question, does it actually matter where I've been shot from? Let's say I got shot right into my back, will my character fall forward because the force of the bullet pushed my body that way? Could it be figured out whats the direction I was getting shot at?
