Mat 117

So.... I took MAT 117 through a ULC class so that I could dip my toes into college curriculum and get a little practice on organization. Even though I was behind the ball and returning to school 15 years after my last algebra class, I loved the lessons and earned a perfect grade. The class was very well organized and easy to understand.

Fast forward... I decided to apply for "regular" college and retook MAT 117 for finacial reasons (pell grant would not cover the ULC class). The topics are exactly the same but the lessons are nothing like the ULC class. I am not sure I would even call them lessons at all. The "teaching" aspect is maybe 5% of what the same class was through ULC.

The ULC class had wonderful lectures and worksheets that clarified each topic. However, the "real" MAT 117 feels like somebody took each paper from the ULC class, (minus the explanations, worksheets and lectures) and threw them all into the air for a game of twenty one hundred pickup before leaving the room and telling me to figure it out.

Thank God I had just finished this ULC class, otherwise I would be absolutely drowning and extremely discouraged about my academic future. I need to take pre-calculus and calculus for life sciences next and I am terrified that these classes will be taught in the same way.

Has anyone else experienced this? I am totally new to college after dropping out in the 9th grade due to personal reasons and have been working as a teacher and coach myself for a long time. I am a very hard worker and want to do very well working towards a challenging degree. It will only get harder from here. 😬 Any tips are appreciated... I do not have anyone else in my corner with applicable knowledge. Is it just the way that a single teacher runs their class? Should I pick a different teacher? Is it helpful to purchase the text book and work from start to finish? SOS!!

Thanks, y'all 🙏

GPA/Average GPA

Specifically in the W.P Carey school of business, as I would imagine IRA is obviously harder. But what is the average graduating GPA here? Or if you’re in WPC what is or was your GPA?

I’m graduating this upcoming summer and currently have a 3.10 cumulative and 3.8 major hoping to bring it to at least a 3.2 and 3.9

Is graduating with a 3.2 seen as low/really low for WPC/ASU?

Obviously, as I’ve heard GPA really doesn’t matter after your first professional position but just curious overall ig.

Vent: Why didn't they tell me?!

Math has never been easy for me. I was finally doing really well in my ASU math course though-I was so proud of myself. I scored an 88 on the first exam and promptly began the next module. I thought I was doing so well until a week later, I find that I recieve a 0 for my exam! Apparently my camera wasn't set up right. I'll do it again, but I'm so upset. They should have told me earlier. Any one else going through something similar? This course is a blessing, but it can really suck sometimes. I just hope I can get through this with a b.

Am I cooked?

I’m planning on taking chm 113 and mat 251 for summer session A coming up. Anyone done this before? I was looking through the Reddit about mat 251 and everyone says it’s pretty difficult. I’m currently taking mat 170 and I’m going to end with an A, so that is helpful. Just looking for some advice :)

Financial Aid Question

Does ASU offer the loan options before they've finished processing the aid package for summer? I don't have any financial tasks to complete and pell grant is not listed in the summary.

TIA

Marketing academic advice!

I’m trying to plan out my academic path and would love advice from people actually working in marketing, fashion, consumer insights, PMM, merchandising, etc.

I’ll be doing ASU Online with a Marketing major and a Digital Audiences minor, plus certificates and internships. That’s my current plan, but I’m still unsure if it’s the best long‑term move.

I’m honestly stressed about AI and how many people get this degree. I keep seeing people say they’re struggling to get hired even with internships, and it worries me. I don’t know if it’s because their portfolios are weak, if they didn’t specialize, or if the field is just oversaturated. I’m looking for some comfort and real insight from people who’ve been through it.

A bit about me and what I like:

  • I love strategy and problem‑solving
  • I’m really into consumer insights and understanding why people buy
  • I like PMM, brand strategy, and working with a team
  • I’m also interested in consumer insights analyst roles, merchandising strategy/analyst, and e‑commerce strategy
  • I prefer behind the scenes roles
  • I want to build and maintain a brand long‑term and eventually work my way up to leadership
  • I’m NOT trying to be a graphic designer or carry full creative burden
  • I’m not a “math equations” person, I like interpreting data and trends, not doing heavy calculations
  • I get bored easily if the work is repetitive
  • I don’t mind a general structure to my day, but I don’t want a job where I’m isolated doing the same task for years
  • I want a role where I’m constantly switching between projects, talking to different teams, doing research, being in meetings, and solving new problems
  • I like staying busy, working hard, and actually seeing results from what I do
  • I want a job that’s recession‑resistant and not easily replaced by AI
  • And most importantly: fashion world in some way this is a non‑negotiable. I want to work in the fashion industry specifically, not general marketing. (I think fashion‑tech roles would suit me really well)

I also like the idea of product management, but I’m worried about the whole “doing 10 people’s jobs” thing. PMM feels more realistic for me since it’s more strategy + consumer insight focused.

My main concern is: is it actually possible to stand out and get hired in marketing if you focus on strategy, insights, and a specific industry like fashion? Or is the job market really as bad as people make it sound?

What I’m trying to figure out is what academic path actually makes sense for someone like me. Should I:

  • Stick with marketing + digital audiences and add certificates
  • Add a minor like data analytics or fashion merchandising
  • Or choose a different major entirely that still leads to strategy/data roles in fashion

Basically, what major/minor/certificate combo gives the best ROI, job security, and helps someone stand out in the fashion/marketing world?

If you work in fashion, marketing, consumer insights, PMM, merchandising, e‑commerce, etc., I’d really appreciate your perspective. What majors/minors actually matter? What skills should I be building? And is it realistic to build a stable career in this space if you’re intentional about it?

Thanks in advance I’m trying to make smart choices now so I can build the career I really want. And if I have the wrong idea about anything, please feel free to correct me I don’t have anyone in my life who works in this world, so I’m trying to learn what it’s really like through the internet.

Cell biology major no real experience and I just want to learn...

Hey! I am sophomore here, and I faced real difficulty getting my first volunteering/internship position in a laboratory. I don't have anything to put on my resume, and I am unable to get my very first experience in-person like an on-campus student would. Does cold calling/ emailing labs even work? Should I try showing up in-person and saying I'll do it for free? I can't get lab skills before I'm hired.

ECN 211 nd 212

Is it a bad idea to take ecn 211 and 212 at the same time, I’ve failed a couple classes now and I need to lowkey catch up as my fall semester will be the start of my junior year, any suggestions?

To those who already passed CHM 114, did y’all use the practice exam to help you pass?

I’m taking the class and struggling with the material and have an exam next week.
