Double Feature

My wife can’t (won’t) pull a double feature with me so this weekend she’s out of town and I get to have one. Featuring my new hat and my AMC brand blanket. Saw Michael and waiting Mother Mary to start. It’s my second double feature in two weeks since I took a day off last week she didn’t. Definitely earned my membership this month.

Michael was so good but I’m a sucker for a biopic. It was crazy how transformative Colman Domingo was. Every time they zoomed in on his eyes, he was unrecognizable and creepy. Looking forward to the next one.

Fuze- thumbs up

I really liked the movie.

And it veered off the normal heist movie- where you see the planing stages, the introduction to the team and so forth.

Nope- movie opens up right on the "ww2 bomb discovered during construction digging"

And i will leave off describing anything further about the movie.

I went in blind just because of time slot, and the AMC blurb--

"In this gripping thriller, an unexploded bomb is found at a bustling London construction site, and the resulting citywide evacuation becomes the cover for a multi-million pound jewel heist."

Just got out of a showing of I Swear and these are my thoughts on it.

My goodness that was a really good movie. Robert Aramayo absolutely deserved that BAFTA win and honestly kinda deserved to be nominated for an Oscar as well. This movie had me laughing, crying, and at times, quite tense, especially during any scene where John was out in public by himself or meeting someone for the first time. On a side note, Maxine Peake deserved just as much recognition as Robert for her portrayal of his "2nd mother" Dottie. All in all, this film was funny, sad, and very educational.

Michael 5 sentence review.

  1. Don’t believe the haters

2)There is a strong family dynamic at play. It is the core of the movie.

  1. It perfectly captures the 80s and Jackson’s rise to meteoric fame.

  2. Jaafar Jackson will have you believing he’s Michael

  3. The entertainment value of this movie cannot be overstated

Proof of weekend price increase for drinks online at my regular theater.

On weekends the price of a soda increases by 10 cents. This has happened the last 3 weekends at my regular theater, but not at other theaters. Not to mention the price of a large has increased $1 over the course of the last year.

I just got out of Over Your Dead Body and here are my thoughts.

This was definitely the most fun I've had at the movies by far this month. I won't go into spoilers but there were a lot of surprises that I didn't expect in this one. The acting was pretty great all around and the story, while somewhat conventional, was still really fun and entertaining. So I was honestly a little surprised to see it only has a 65% on Rotten Tomatoes and checking the official discussion of r/movies, I was a little surprised to see that a lot of people were saying they found it disappointing. I feel like maybe I watched a different movie than everyone else. I just thought it was a great time.

😵‍💫 So I think I already have the entire month of May scheduled...

...And it's so stacked that I couldn't even pack everything in. I'm probably going to have to skip on Deep Water and Animal Farm. I might still squeeze in the two Screen Unseens à la carte since they're pretty cheap and I could use the points, and maybe even a few of the re-releases to gain back some slots on full price movies that I still might want to catch. But maaaaan, I feel like I'm going to be living at the theater next month. Hell, they're probably going to get even more heavy-handed with the anniversary releases over the summer along with all of the major blockbusters. My head is spinning 😅

I just got out of seeing Mother Mary, and here are my thoughts.

I thought, on a technical viewpoint, the movie looked great. The cinematography, the editing, the score and soundtrack, and the acting were all very well done. The problem I had was with basically everything else. Beyond the barebones plot of a major popstar reuniting with her former stylist to create a new dress, nothing else in this film made any sense to me whatsoever. I don't know if I'm just stupid or what but I genuinely don't know what this movie was trying to say, if it was trying to say anything at all. I feel like a lot of this film was supposed to be a metaphor for something, but what exactly that is, I couldn't tell you. And unfortunately, as a result, I found the film visually nice but otherwise dreadfully boring. It almost came across as pretentious in a way. Which is a shame because I had been looking forward to this one.

I used the Theater Ears app to listen to Project Hail Mary Director’s commentary and I honestly feel like it’s an absolute game changer. Read my experience below, please.

Saw Project Hail Mary for the third time yesterday morning to kill time before lunch and another movie and it was an incredible experience.

For those that don’t know, Theater Ears is an app that can offer alternative audio tracks to films you watch in the theater. It’s primarily marketed as a Spanish dub tool for language/accessibility.

The app seems to be trying something new and they are offering a director’s experience with Project Hail Mary. As soon as the movie started, I had one ear bud in and I could hear the directors talking about the filmmaking process. Right off the bat they’re like, “this first scene with Ryan waking up is the first scene he filmed, it was a great way to introduce him to the character and he needed to figure out who he was” or something along those lines.

I’m sitting there in the theater realizing I’m having a completely different experience in this than anyone else in here and there is something special about that.

I think we are the very unique community that can use this app regularly. Not sure about yall but I will happily see a movie several times in theater if it was an enjoyable experience. Now to be able to rewatch with commentary, cmon! Amaze amaze amaze

Technical details. I’m on an iPhone, not sure if it’s on android.

It seems that the app uses location and microphone to synchronize with where you are in the movie and it’s VERY accurate. The app warns you that you can’t record the audio track because it’s illegal and against their policies. I had to step out for a work call for about 30 minutes and when I came back into the theater, the app picked right back up where the movie was, I dint have to scrub through or do anything, honestly couldn’t be easier.

The app seemed to have that brightness override which dimmed the screen to its lowest level and couldn’t be brought up, similar to that live movie voting app from the interactive film experiences.

With physical media becoming less common, this was a feature on DVDs that I loved and soemthing I feel like is missing from multiple streaming platforms. Could this be expanded beyond theaters? Could it be expanded within theaters?!?!

I’m telling yall. This thing is a total game changer.

Has anyone tried it? What movies would be best for a feature like this?

Here’s the link to the iPhone app:

Thoughts about Screen X

I liked Screen X more than I thought I would. It was cool and fun for the Michael Jackson movie.

It's basically three huge screens. Some scenes don't utilize the side screens. Other scenes stretch the picture to fit the side screens. I guess someone has to edit the movies and make these decisions.

The light from the side screens has a really cool way of lighting up the theater and making you feel more like you're there. I don't feel like it's vital to sit in the center, but I would not sit too close to the screen in front.

The sound is good too... better than a regular theater. I don't know if this new format will drive crowds to theaters.... but it's worth trying out as an a-list-er

I really liked Michael

I went in expecting something pretty bad based on the critic scores, but I ended up really enjoying it. As a first installment, it works well and feels like a solid setup. It doesn’t get into the darker parts of his career, but that seems more like the story hasn’t reached that stage yet rather than the film avoiding it.

As a piece of entertainment and a celebration of his music, it really worked for me. I’ll definitely be watching the second part.

How much have you paid for tickets out of pocket so far? (not including Fathom Events)

AMC has upped their rerelease game a lot this year, and I’ve been paying for some of them so I can watch newer movies or expensive IMAX rereleases with A-List. I do my best to only pay for the cheapest tickets/fan faves.

  1. The Revenant ($7.75 - $5 reward = $2.75)

  2. I Swear ($7.75 Unseen Screen)

  3. The Mummy Returns ($7.75)

  4. Jerry Maguire ($7.75)

  5. Fight Club ($7.75)

**Total: $33.75**

Edit: I’ve seen 67 movies in theaters this year.
