Are the transmissions that bad?

Hello everyone, I am looking to get a civic coupe as a cheap beater car just for use around town to keep city miles off my current car, and to have an automatic. I’ve been doing some research and saw that the early civics of this generation pre facelift have severe issues with the transmissions. I prefer the look of the pre facelift so my question is: Can I realistically expect the car to last me let’s say 2~4 years of mostly city driving without the transmission quitting on me. Obviously head gasket and other miscellaneous things I would need to watch out for but all that I can take care of myself, a dead transmission if I can’t find a cheap used one will be a death sentence for the car to me.

Can you help me?

I just redid the suspension on my car and now it starts but immediately dies unless I'm on the gas, it gives me p0113, I checked the iat sensor and its reading 1.8k ohms and changes with heat/cooling so I think its good, but the wiring connecting to it is only at 0.6v.. can one of you guys check it on your car to see what it reads? Its a little bit tricky to probe but if you remove the top of it with a flat head its easier to access

The 7th gen civic gets hate for no reason absolute beast of a daily driver. Canadian winters are harsh to say the least I know I can always rely on the civic to start up even in -30 weather 😅.

I highly recommend the 01-05 civic to anyone who’s looking for a great cheap daily driver.

OEM front strut assembly 2001 civic

front struts seem to be discontinued. what's some OEM direct fits for 2001 civic EX? looking at rockauto and what i can find on the internet, monroe seems mixed and i haven't heard much about gabriel. i'm just thinking about pulling from junkyard, is that a good idea or too risky play

Those who've used ARP headstuds, how many miles have you gotten out of the headgasket job? Anyone put 50k + miles on their D17 with ARP head studs?

About 5 years ago, did a headgasket job on my mom's 04 Civic at around 210k, Now it appears the headgasket is going again and pushing coolant out to the overflow at 260k. Pretty pissed that its now going since I used an OEM headgasket and brand new head bolts and made sure it was torqued to spec. Have an 02 that had the headgasket job done maybe 2-3 years prior by a friend and its still holding up, but its driven far less, but has about the same overall mileage on the new head gasket as the 04.

One thing I recall reading that switching to ARP studs should help with the issue. Has anyone done it and put 100k+ miles on their Civic? I take the higher torque on the studs, should help? Has anyone had to replace the headgasket another time?

I'll just rant, I rather work on a previous gen Civic/Integra with a d16 or any b series over this d17 any day of the week, but this civic has been solid since 04.

05 EX coupe no start

I'm losing the battle, a month or so ago, I got a cam sensor CEL p0340, got new cam sensor and was able to drive around for a bit. Reset the ecu and tried to do an idle relearn no start. So going down the list I did the crank sensor, spark plugs, coil packs, compression test (150 psi cold engine), checked for fuel and redid timing just in case. No difference but this gargling sound when I press the gas pedal and stalling or quickly stalling without pressing gas pedal but very rough.

Has anyone encountered this before or can tell me anything I've missed? I don't wanna say goodbye to my dear civic yet so I'd really appreciate some help and advice, thank you.

needing engine advice/opinions please

maybe a dumb post but i want your guys opinions. i got my lil 2003 civic ex auto (192k) its my first car and i LOVEEE her. everything i’ve learned ab cars has been bc of her. that being said, i believe my head gasket is bad, along with piston rings and valves.

i’ve had coolant flow issues forever but haven’t wanted to face it being the headgasket, then past month or so i’ve had misfire issues mainly with cyl 2. i replaced spark plugs other small stuff and i’ve finally ran my ass around 3 mechanics. 1st said valve adjustment, 2nd said engine is fucked (he only compression tested the one cylinder came out to 60, i did it afterwards and think all were 140-155 cold engine), last place went in with a bore scope and said valves and piston rings are bad, engine needs replaced. none of them went in super detail which is a bit disappointing, but now i’m debating on what to do.

i’ve never dug into the engine past the valve lash so it’s all pretty new to me but i have been learning a lot lately. i have more or less 3k to spend with this, don’t know what the best course of action is. i’m thinking for this car, i wanna clean her up have light mods, some slight boost but nothing insane yet. k swap crossed my mind but i don’t know how viable it is for me currently.

she drives pretty good, haven’t noticed sluggish acceleration or anything like that. idle is shaky uneven and bad(esp at startup) and you can hear/see “spitting” thru the exhaust but no smoke. check engine light randomly has turned off 3 times.

should i just open the head up and see where i’m at? repair if it is repairable but replace if not? if so should i stick with d17 or swap to another? i’m just kinda hesitant about swapping bc this engine has done worlds for me even in just 2 years.

apologies for the rant, just wanted to make sure there’s background info and really wanna get back to driving. i’ve drove very little with this misfire and miss feeling confident behind the wheel. ANYTHING at all helps, much much appreciated 🙏🏻

Update on my crashed civic (TW pov from the drivers seat)

I was taking out some usable parts from my civic the other day and I noticed that someone had welded the A pillar in the past, it split like firewood and was rusty as fuck inside (it's kinda visible in the image) I also took out the headers seats and a couple of misc parts: aftermarket speakers, horn, radio, and "The Tube™" apparatus from the very dodgy exhaust "upgrade". The engine looks undamaged and I might take it out for a future project. I also got my stitches removed today so I'm basically fully healed and ready for round 2 of my civic owner experience.

No audio playing through speakers

To provide some context, I installed this CarPlay unit into my 05 civic lx in August of 2025. Up until today I have had no issues with anything related to audio. However, just this afternoon I went to pick up some food and suddenly no matter what I troubleshooted there was no audio. I tried to play through wireless CarPlay, wired CarPlay, the radio, and the one (weirdly Madonna) song preloaded onto the device yet nothing worked. If anyone’s has experience with this or any idea what it could be i would greatly appreciate the help, as I have a 6 hr drive tomorrow and no aux would be brutal. Thanks!
