Looking for advice on whether to pick up Caves of Qud

I keep seeing people talking about how great it is, and I believe them, so I was hoping y'all could help clarify whether I'd enjoy it (before I shell out $30 and then burn my 2 hour refund window setting up keybinds). I get that that's a silly question without context, so here's some context:

  • I'm not a fan of sandbox style games. Clear goals like in ToME, DCSS, and Lost Flame appeal to me.
  • I hate strict hunger clocks. I've bounced off Shattered Pixel Dungeon after winning on my first run because that level of constant starvation just isn't fun at all to me.
  • I don't care about lore. I've seen a lot of people gush about how the whole world's backstory is generated for each seed, which while technically impressive, doesn't mean any more to me than Nethack pointing me at the Amulet of Yendor and saying "go."
  • I'm a murderhobo at heart, not a survival-crafter, city-builder, nor a stealth enjoyer. Games like Elin or Cogmind where the focus isn't centered firmly on combat don't really appeal to me.
  • I like playing games "correctly," so if optimal play is miserable, that's kind of a deal breaker for me. For instance, I've ascended a few times in Nethack, but learning about curse testing with pets and price IDing items has made it so that I'll probably never pick up the game again.

Thanks for any help with this decision.

[Also, I know r/cavesofqud exists, but I figured asking here made more sense, since I imagine anyone reading that sub regularly would recommend the game almost unconditionally. Not trying to say anything about that community in particular; it's just how most subs for specific games are, unless they're livid about a recent update or lack thereof.]
