25/26 Player Spotlight: Matty Sorinola

25/26 Player Spotlight: Matty Sorinola

25/26 Player Spotlight: Matty Sorinola

Appearances: 36 (26 starts)

Minutes: 2440

Goals: 1

I think players like Sorinola have a tough time with being used properly. He's probably not got the height / strength / aerial ability to be an out and out full back, but not got the attacking quality to be a winger. Getting him into the 4-4-2 as a wide-midfielder was a stroke of genius though.

I was surprised to read how many games he's played this season. I felt as though he was injured more often. He's had an OK season, nothing great, nothing poor.

Season Rating: ⭐⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I believe we now enter the final year of Sorinola's deal. Will be interesting to see what happens here with him. Cleverley clearly rates him, but I wonder if we may prioritise bringing in a more physical left-back and more creative wide players fit for the Championship, before offering Matty a new deal. Does this therefore mean Matty will be out of the door this summer to make way for new players?

25/26 Player Spotlight: Brendan Galloway

25/26 Player Spotlight: Brendan Galloway

Appearances: 24 (18 starts)

Minutes: 1579

Goals: 2

Assists: 0

I believe that the narrative around Galloway is that he's been missing most of this season, which I don't believe is the case. He did suffer a couple of injuries, but I believe he was available for large parts of the season and simply not selected.

Quality player who was always good when we played. A Championship LB on the pitch. Pretty much always reliable, great tackler, great ball progression, wins ~85% of his duels.

Season Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐ / ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Brendan Galloway has been released and leaves Argyle as a title winner and centurion. His body has let him down time after time, but ultimately he should be playing in the Championship if his body would allow it. Due to lack of selection by Cleverley and BG's most recent injury, it seems sensible that this is where we part ways. Good luck, Brendan!

I was surprised to read he has an assist in League One this season. I don't remember it.

He's a player I never warmed to. It wasn't a good fit here. Glad we moved him on.

Season Rating: 0/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Good luck Victor. I can't say I have anything against him personally, but he was the THE Rooney man and I never liked that. He'll be a quiz question one day - so remember the name!

25/26 Player Spotlight: Mathias Ross

25/26 Player Spotlight: Mathias Ross

Appearances: 39

Minutes: 2903

Goals: 4

Assists: 1

Took Mathias a little while to adjust to life in the EFL, but now he's settled. He's some player.

He was too quick to launch the ball forward earlier in the season, but has learned when to release and when to hold. He's got to grips with the physicality of League One strikers and is a real talent in both boxes. 4 goals and 1 assist is a great return.

Season Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐/⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

I would've given him 3 stars if it wasn't for the goals. The reason for this is that I thought he was way too rush with the ball "lumping it long" every time it came to him for the first half of the season. His transformation has been excellent and you can clearly see his technical qualities. Two years left on his deal - hugely important player to retain in the squad as we push for promotion next season.

Rangers to have £5m Lorent Tolaj bid accepted by Plymouth (..well not really)

The title has self-populated from the article itself... But you should be aware it's very click baity.

The article also says Rangers will struggle to bid £5m.

It appears that this figure is an estimate from elsewhere in the footballing world and not from Argyle.

That said, I think £5m seems OK as a starting point for a bidding war.

The source is Pete O'Rourke, so it's not FootballInsider bollocks.

25/26 Player Spotlight: Julio Pleguezuelo

25/26 Player Spotlight: Julio Pleguezuelo

Appearances: 6

Goals: 0

A season hampered by injuries. He looked a positive player when he did play and I'm sure he'll be an asset to the squad next year. He is surely more than capable of delivering at League One level.

He's done some fantastic off-pitch work too this year and although that doesn't earn him any stars in this, it should be recognised.

Season Rating: ⭐⭐ / ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

Pleggy should be like a new signing next season and I'm interested to see him in action. He's entering the last year on his contract, so it's an important year for him. With all eyes on promotion, he will have to use next season as a year to earn a new Championship contract.

25/26 Player Spotlights: Zak Baker

Brief Synopsis: No appearances for Baker in what has been a difficult season for GKs at Argyle.

Zak Baker follows LAH out the door and is released. Strange one, as there was plenty of excitement around him a few years ago.

LAH first wore Green as a trialist in pre-season in Austria. During the match, whilst receiving a back pass, LAH sliced the ball and it ended up in his own net. Despite this, he was offered a 1 year contract with Argyle.

Due to injuries faced by Conor Hazard, LAH made a large number of starts for a backup GK.

His error prone nature cost Argyle a number of points, but began to settle towards the latter stage of the season - helped perhaps by a more comfortable 10 man unit in front of him.

His highlight of the season was probably his assist for Lorent Tolaj, evidencing his sublime distribution ability, or perhaps his performance at home to Port Vale after Hazards 5th minute red card where he made a number of crucial saves.

2/5 stars for me. Perhaps a little critical, but the number of errors means I can't give him more.

Season Rating: ⭐⭐ / ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

We bid farewell to Luca who has now been released. The club have him a fantastic opportunity to showcase himself at a high level and gain experience. He did offer us some decent performances. He'll no doubt get a gig in a league below. Good luck, Luca.

Argyle 5-1 Exeter City - Devon Challenge Cup Final

Not widely reported on due to it being quite an amateur comp, but the girls battered Exeter tonight. They deserve a trophy lift, even if only the County trophy.

A fantastic season comes to an end.

Girls done us proud... And always, Devon is Green. 🟢⚪

Looks pretty genuine to me. Wish those pinstripes didn't go through the sponsor text though.

IT'S PLAYOFF FINAL DAY!

Argyle vs Wolves

1pm KO at The Pirelli Stadium (Burton Albion)

You can watch the game on Argyle TV.

It's a one-legged tie, the winner is promoted to the WSL2.

Realistically, this is a HUGE opportunity for Argyle. Next season there will not be a playoff place available and therefore promotion can only be achieved by finishing top of their division.

Given the volatile nature of player contracts in the Women's game, Argyle may (naturally) struggle to retain the majority of their side if promotion is not achieved. It is possible that player retention is difficult even with promotion - but that's a discussion for another day.

Join in the Matchday discussion - let's get behind our team.

As our season comes to an end, here are the talking points from yesterday's game.

🟢 Overall a decent performance. Could've scored twice in 5 minutes and probably battered them. A weird 15 minute spell where the goal rocked us but, there's nothing you can do about that second goal.

⚪ Possible Joe Edwards last game in Green. Thought he had a stinker personally, but obviously hope he resigns.

🟢 Northampton fans cheering Luton/Stevenage goals and singing " you're staying down". Laughably tinpot IMO. I know some felt it was a complete insult.

⚪ Cobblers not happy with the ref. I thought he got a lot of minor decisions wrong, but he was right with both yellows for the guy who got sent off. Big decisions seemed to be fine, the small ones were all over the place. Harsh on Dale and Boateng to be booked.

🟢 Amaechi did OK when he came on. How do you rate his season?

⚪ Subs from Amaechi, Wiredu, Sorinola, Pleggy and MacKenzie is a very strong bench for League One. Surely next season, if we can retain our forwards (or adequately replace) and resign the loans, we should be pushing for top ... 6? 2??

Alex Mitchell up first:

AM on winning Men's Player of the Season: "I've never won an award like that. To be voted the winner is a mad concept to me! It's always brilliant to be rewarded. There were so many lads that could've won it, I'm buzzing to have won it.

"All week I thought Malachi Boateng was going to win it - to see his face after was brilliant!"

AM on the play-off race: "This league has been mental. We've just got to control the controllables. If you go into the game looking at other results - I'd rather just worry about ourselves. We need luck to go our way, but it's not completely out of the question."

AM on the Green Army: "Saturday was the loudest I've heard them. They helped us a lot. Without them, I don't think we'd have won [against Port Vale]. I'm hoping they're just as loud at Northampton."

AM: "I really enjoyed my loan at Lincoln, they have a special place in my heart, but this has probably topped it. The way people have taken to me, I've never seen anything like it. You don't realise how much people care about this club until you come down here.

"Every loan is different, you're always trying to learn something, but with this one I've been a leader and a mainstay, and it's probably been the best one."

AM on Tom Cleverley: "I don't want to say too many clichés, but the way he can get me up for a game, the passion he shows. He really gets us going, and is probably the coach that has developed me the most, on the ball and defensively.

"His man-management, how he's dealt with stuff I've had going on, there isn't a better way to handle it. He's been outstanding."

-------

Tom Cleverley now:

TC: "It's an exciting day ahead. You are where you deserve to be at this stage of the season. We approach the game with confidence, and focus on doing our job. The preparation is all about giving ourselves the best chance of winning."

TC on Northampton: "Their work ethic on Tuesday was fantastic. Confidence is low and they've not been on a good run, but they made Barnsley work very hard on Tuesday."

TC on team news: "Joe Ralls is on the grass, it's great to see him out there. Hopefully he plays again this season, because it would mean we're in the play-offs.

"I'm slightly concerned about a sickness bug going around the squad, which has affected a couple of players, but I'm hoping it won't impact us for Saturday.

"I've got 22/23 senior players training at the minute. Three of them have been affected by the bug, so that cuts the group down to 20 - still a decent-sized group to train with. We need to focus on getting those three healthy for Saturday, they may travel by themselves tomorrow."

TC on end-of-season awards: "A few could've put their hat in the ring for the awards, which is pleasing. All the winners deserved it. Alex Mitchell has been outstanding - he's brave, he's got charisma. For a loan player to win is impressive.

"On Malachi Boateng, I get stick for the amount of compliments I give him! He is the definition of low maintenance, gets around his work very professionally. It's been a brilliant season, with one more push for him."

TC on the Green Army: "They're outstanding. I feel privileged to be here, to be backed by such a dedicated fanbase. The lads are playing entertaining football and our fans are dedicated, so we expect to sell out - but we do not take that for granted. Let's hope we can have a few more days out this season."

Geddon boys!

Beating Stockport in the final 1-0 and other Cat 2 & 3 academies along the way. They beat Exeter 5-0, but that's not exactly news!!

You can read the whole article here!

u/xrgyle — 16 days ago

It's quite a simple one for us, really.

We have to beat Northampton (A).

We can only kick Stevenage out of the playoffs and therefore need both Luton and Stevenage not to win.

Luton travel to Bolton.

Stevenage host Wigan.

Bolton are the only team safe in the playoffs, with Luton able to uproot Bradford, Stockport or Stevenage.

I'm quite confident that Bolton will do us a favour... But Caldwell's Wigan away? Not sure about that one.

If we do end up missing out, it's likely that it will be because of 1 point.
