What the title says, I’m probably gonna delete this after I get answers cause I’m just curious

I really don't mean to sound dumb, just curious to learn more about this. My family and I recently have gotten really interested in the ancestry website and have discovered that there are documents labeling my great-great grandma on my moms side as as Indigenous, specifically Mi'kmaq (her family has lived in New Brunswick for a very long time), because she grew up knowing she is Acadian and was likely Indigenous, however, my grandpa's side of the family is very Catholic and I believe they shut down any talk about the Indigenous side of the family. After doing more research, I found out that almsot every woman on her side of the family got their name changed to a Catholic name and I don't believe any of them were known to be registered to their band. My grandma is now curious about potentially applying to the band and/or getting a status card, is this possible since she is Acadian and Indigenous, or is it not worth it for her to try?
