Retail Owner here – customer says I’m almost double another quote. Am I off or is something missing?

I recently sent out a flooring quote and the customer came back saying my price is almost double another contractor’s. They actually broke everything down, which I appreciated.

Here’s the situation:

  • I measured about 1,300 SF, and with 10% waste came out to ~1,456 SF total
  • The other contractor is using a lower square footage (not sure how they measured)

Baseboards:

  • I quoted new baseboards (material + install + caulking + paint)
  • About a $1,000 difference vs keeping existing and adding base shoe

Labor comparison:

  • They’re charging $1,900 for ~1,200 SF laminate install
  • I’m at $4,200 for install

Demo comparison:

  • They’re charging $600 for 350sf of natural stone demo + haul away
  • I’m at $1,500 for demo + haul away

From my perspective, my numbers are pretty in line with doing the job properly (prep, disposal, time, etc.), and not running into issues during or after install.

I told the customer I can be a bit flexible, but I won’t be able to get anywhere near those numbers.

My question:

  • Do my numbers seem high?
  • Or does this sound like the other quote might be missing scope / underbidding?

Not trying to knock the other competitor, just trying to sanity check myself here.
