Undisturbed box from great grandma (?)

Please tell me about them!

I just bought this house, mopped for the first time and found my floors are a lot nicer than I thought, but after the section that peeled up with Murphy's I haven't had any luck getting rid of the grime. I thought maybe it was adhesive but mineral spirits didn't touch it. R/cleaningtips recommended Bona cleaner which also seems to be doing nothing. The other rec was diluted ammonia, but everything else I read says that will damage the floors. Is that safe? What else can I try? TIA

I just bought a house. I mopped for the first time (with Murphy's soap) and -- good news everyone! -- it turns out my floors are a lot nicer than I thought. Some of the nasty scraped up pretty well with a rubber tool. I thought it was adhesive, did some research and got mineral spirits, but that did literally nothing. What else can I try that won't harm the finish? Any theories as to what it is?
