Sairaat has completed 10 years, a whole decade has passed. Yet Nagraj Manjule hasn’t directed a single Marathi film since then.
Sairaat changed Marathi cinema forever. The hype around the film and Manjule as a director was at its peak for years after its release. Any Marathi project he made during that period would have done great numbers, but he is yet to make another Marathi film.
After the success of Sairaat, he moved to Bollywood to direct Jhund. That move was understandable, especially with Amitabh Bachchan involved. However, the film got delayed and eventually released after the pandemic, where it didn’t perform well. It likely would have grossed much higher if it had released between 2018–19.
In the meantime, he hosted the Marathi version of Kaun Banega Crorepati, acted in Naal 2 and Ghar Banduk Biryani, among other projects. But over the years, the hype around him has faded.
If he had made at least two Marathi films in the last decade, the Marathi film industry could have been in a very different place today. Now he’s working on a Hindi web series, which, to be honest, people tend to forget within a week. His film Khashaba, announced in 2023, also seems to be stuck in limbo.
Manjule not directing a Marathi film after Sairaat is like S. S. Rajamouli not making any films after Baahubali. It feels like a huge missed opportunity for Marathi cinema.
