I've never read and Zutara fics nor do I plan on, but I'm just curious, without changing the much of cannon, how the hell is his character written to try to make it make sense.

Is he like token paired with toph or onji?

Is it a pathetic hunchback of notre Dame esq thing where his friend cucks him and he just takes it?

How does katara behave towards him?

Like the entire concept just feels so weird to me that I can't help but wonder

Her marriage with aang.

Aang is a neutral party required to pass sensitive laws. Because of this, politicians pocketed by Yakone are claiming that Katara's bill presents a conflict of interest.

To circumnavigate this argument, Sokka hatches the brilliant idea to have Aang feign opposing the law and have a bill hearing where Aang and Katara must argue back and forth their stances.

To insure authenticity, neither know the other's arguments.

Aang's secret weapon is to bring in the firelord himself to reveal to the city that katara is a bloodbender herself and used the southern raiders experience for his argument.

This lands as a low blow to her since she thinks now there's no chance the bill will pass but Aang trusts his wife's conviction even if she doesn't trust herself.
