I have this routine before ako pumasok sa subdivision namin, I stop by a convenience store along the main road para bumili ng snacks or necessities. Tanghali ito, sobrang luwag ng kalsada, at yung parking space naman is very spacious and easy to navigate. Technically, you don't even need assistance para makalabas-masok.

Nung pag-park ko, may nakita akong manong just sitting there. I didn't know na siya pala yung parang unofficial parking attendant. Hindi niya ako in-assist nung pumasok ako, which is totally fine by me kasi I’m very comfortable naman with the layout. Pero nung pasakay na ako at paalis na, biglang naging proactive si kuya. He started whistling and doing hand signals even though the road was clear.

Dahil usual stop ko ito at wala naman talagang value added yung effort niya, I decided not to tip. I acknowledge naman that these people are just hustling, and whenever nasa ibang lugar ako or pag mahirap talaga yung exit, I always make sure to give a tip. Pero in this specific scenario, I felt like it wasn’t necessary.

Nung nakita niyang wala akong balak mag-abot, biglang hinampas ni manong yung side mirror ko at nag-dirty finger siya sa akin habang umaalis ako.

I was shocked. Feeling ko hindi naman mandatory ang pagbibigay ng barya, especially for assistance that wasn't requested or even needed, but his reaction was so aggressive and uncalled for.

Am I the gago for choosing not to tip this time? Or is it a social expectation na kailangan mo talagang mag-bayad "just because" even for unsolicited help?
