Just ordered my TrimUI Brick. What OS is everyone using?

My Anbernics have had Knulli but I wanna go a different direction with the Brick. I think NextUI is a strong contender for me for:

  • Overlay support (I really like the GAMEBOY Advance logo on the bottom and the GB/GBC power light and overlay for those specific platforms)
  • Game switcher
  • Boxart/scraping support
  • Real Time Clock support
  • Deep sleep mode (although I haven't seen this demonstrated with how good this is and how "instant" the turn on from deep sleep is)

Other features I'd really like are portmaster support but it's not listed the github page for NextUI. I mainly need it to install Rockbox to use as a music player, but I guess that's on the pakstore (which I also don't see listed on the github page)

I'd like to know who has had experience with NextUI on their TrimUI Brick, and how that experience has been? If anyone is using a different OS and likes their experience with that, I'm opening to hear that as well.

Thanks in advance!

I’ve been happy with my Ayaneo Pocket Air Mini (PAM) which I mostly use to play Gameboy Color and Advance games (been going through a Pokemon kick lately). I do have some Android games and sometimes mess with it to see how smooth some PS2 and GameCube games run on it. If it doesn’t play well I’d prefer to play it on my Steam Deck or elsewhere where it will run more smoothly.

But recently I came across a video of someone playing Tomb Raider 2013 on it in Gamma OS and compared it to Stock OS. I do see somewhat of a performance bump but if it’s because it’s being overclocked then there would also be some battery life sacrifices there as well. I tried looking into Gamma OS and couldn’t find many videos of people saying why one SHOULD switch to it.

It seems like a lightweight OS, and the lite version is what I find appealing to run without any bloat but it has me concerned on not being able to download apps from the Play Store. Daijisho seems ok but I’ve been accustomed to Emulation Station across my handhelds (I know I can still run ES as a launcher if I switch to Gamma).

My main thing is it took me a while to fully set up my PAM the way I wanted it especially with setting up most of the emulators from scratch, scraping for all my games, and configuring hot keys, not to mention all the time I actually spent playing and accumulating save data and save states. If I switch to Gamma OS, I’d hate to have to go through all that again and figuring out how to get all my old save states and save data working. Another concern is the Ayaneo button on the PAM brings up a utility menu that I can use to switch device modes (Eco, Balanced, Gaming, and Max) and button modes (Xbox or Japanese button layouts). Would I lose that functionality if I switched?

So I’m mainly wondering what anyone else’s experience here is like with Gamma OS on their device. Is it worth the switch? Did you go regular or lite?

And if anyone wants to know why I’m wondering about this now, I’m mainly just curious. I’m leaning towards keeping things the way they are on my PAM but would like to know more about Gamma OS as a possible option if I want to shake things up a bit. Thanks in advance!
