Before we get into the review, some disclaimers:

  • I wrote this in June of 2024 back when the series first finished airing and wayyyyyy before everything else happened
  • It's been slightly edited for swearing
  • It is NOT a positive review so stop here if that'll upset you
  • The series is ranked much lower now that I've watched a lot more GL since then (17th and 22nd place out of 33)

Okay, without further ado:

Blank the Series: The Chao Planoy Cinematic Universe’s Newest Entry

It is a surprise to no one (or at least, not to me) that Blank the Series ended up as successful as it did. Did it deserve its success? Plot-wise, absolutely not. Acting-wise, maybe. I believe Blank had pretty women, a beloved IP, and luck on their side, and fortunately, two of those things are very easy to recreate.

Is Blank as Problematic as People Say It Is? (Let’s Get the Conversation about the Age Gap Out of the Way)

Blank is an age gap romance GL series between loner Thai heiress Khun Nueng (played by Faye Peraya) and cheerful student Anueng (played by Yoko Apasra). The two face a lot of turmoil as their relationship grows despite their 16 year age difference. Spending any time in GL fandom spaces will tell you that the opinion on this series is very divided. To say the least, a 16 year age gap is quite alarming, even more so when the younger individual is in high school when the couple meets. Before the series aired, GL watchers were very adamant in their position that watching and supporting this series was a moral failing on the watcher’s part. And I agreed to some extent: It’s questionable when a group of people create a production company and the first media they create is in a sense romanticizing something that is universally seen as morally reprehensible (pedophilia/grooming). Nine Star Studios is granted a little bit of slack however, for changing Anueng’s age at the start of the series from 16 (novel age) to 20. Unfortunately, aging up Anueng to be 20 when the series starts means nothing when they have the actress portraying the character in a way that exaggerates the gap in the couple’s maturity. It reads as if they wanted to keep Anueng at 16 but knew that would be infinitely worse and not “romantic” to a lot of watchers. So, they explain away her immaturity and high school uniform by saying she was held back because of “birth defects”.

To call Nueng^(2) (their ship name) a relationship where Anueng was groomed has its justifications. Anueng was technically in high school when they met and Anueng’s family assumed Khun Nueng’s relationship to Anueng was matronly or sisterly. The argument against grooming is that Khun Nueng met Anueng when Anueng was of legal age and didn’t pursue a relationship until 2 years after their first meeting. Despite Khun Nueng’s relationship to Anueng’s parents, Khun Nueng did not know of Anueng’s existence before meeting her at 20.

Based on Anueng’s trauma in the series, I often said “What Anueng needed was an older sister, NOT a girlfriend.” She was an abandoned kid with an abusive grandmother, so it makes perfect sense that she latched onto Khun Nueng like that. To me, the bigger part of the ickiness of their relationship comes from the fact that both Anueng’s biological father and mother had romantic relationships with Khun Nueng. The Nueng^(2) age gap is exacerbated by the shadiness of those pre-Anueng relationships. It’s frustrating to see how well the show would have worked if Anueng started the show out in university, but it doesn’t matter because the main conflict doesn’t come from their age gap, but from the fact that the family drama is so messy. The only plus of having Anueng start in university is that I wouldn’t have had to see Anueng in a high school uniform clinging onto a grown woman.

World Building, Character Choices, and the Luxury of a Mid-Season Break

Truthfully, before episode 6, the show was BAD ‼️ Anyone sincerely saying otherwise unfortunately lacks critical media observation skills and will give anything that has “girls kissing” a 5/5 star review. Ignoring the wack ass plot, the dialogue was incredibly cringey, the acting fell flat or was downright unnatural, and the lack of budget was very obvious. Season 2 (or episodes 7-12 as I like to refer to them) however, had me applauding Nine Star Studios for securing that budget increase, because my god, did they use it well. Despite not paying attention to continuity (the constant changing of Yoko’s hair color during the series drove me MAD), reshoots honestly saved some of the world building in season 2. The supporting cast at Anueng’s university, specifically Yui (played by Niriwin), was honestly one of my favorite uses of side characters in the series. Yui’s character was a great addition to the show and Anueng’s character development outside of her relationship with Khun Nueng. I hope that Nine Star Studios offers Niriwin a contract as a full time artist of theirs and that I get to see Yoko and Niriwin be scene partners in the future.

As for the main characters, a stand out actor to me during all of this is Yoko. Now, the script and character choices for Anueng in season 1 did Yoko dirty. So much so that I was blown away when more emotion was added to her scenes with Faye/Khun Nueng. I specifically remember being impressed with her skills during Nueng^(2)'s first break up scene. I was blown away by that and her subsequent dramatic scenes of season 2. Again, I hope Nine Star Studios offers her a contract as a full time artist of theirs and that she gets more roles with a scene partner who isn’t twice her age.

Nine Star’s Success and Their Future Endeavors

At the beginning of this analysis, I said that I wasn’t surprised that Blank ended up successful. Many GL watchers know that adaptations from author Chao Planoy are going to plague our screens for quite a while as Thai GL finds its footing. All of this is because of the explosive success that Gap the Series and actresses FreenBecky achieved during and after its run. Production companies (I would say, wrongly) assumed that Chao Planoy novels are the key to success when in actuality it was FreenBecky’s chemistry and newness of the GL genre that Gap the Series owes its success to. Nine Star Studios choosing Blank as the novel to adapt could have been seen as a risky move considering that it’s one of Chao Planoy’s more shady novels. But after some thought, it was probably a smart decision to adapt Blank as a new and small studio. Blank is the novel that is the closest to Gap in terms of its place in the Chao Planoy Literary Universe. Khun Nueng is Khun Sam’s older sister, and the dynamic of Nueng^(2)’s relationship mirrors that of Sam and Mon’s (black & pink, grumpy & sunshine, old & young, rich & poor). It was a safe choice in the grand scheme of things and it worked out in their favor. It also helped that the face of the series was Miss Grand Thailand 2016!

I do want to say that it was admirable how NineStarStudios was able to take the series' success and put it right back into their artistry. That looked like improving subtitles for season 2, recording an OST (which sounds adorable might I add), and reshooting scenes they weren’t happy with. All of this tells me that whatever projects Nine Star makes in the future will at the very least pique my interest.

Final Thoughts (I Don’t Regret Watching Blank, But I Can’t In Good Faith Recommend It)

Overall, this series definitely should not be hailed as the pinnacle of Thai GL by any means. It also doesn’t need to be added to required Thai GL watching if it can be avoided. The first three episodes of the series present a questionable intended audience and viewer discretion should be advised. At the end of the day, I definitely have little to no respect for the older individuals participating in the series outside of a business perspective. On a lighter note, I think the only way to watch this series is to incapacitate yourself for those first three episodes (I did this by accidentally dehydrating myself doing surgery prep, but alcohol would be much easier), sit in awe at the insane (and I truly mean, BONKERS) lore drop episodes 4-5, and find two chill friends to live recap the rest of the series to like it’s Thai Riverdale. No joke, the most enjoyable part of this series was to text my friends every Saturday with something along the lines of “You won’t BELIEVE what deadbeat lavender boyfriend Chet just said right now” and have them be like “We have no idea what you’re saying, but so true, queen!” I ended up rating episodes 1-6, 7.0 (out of 10) stars, and episodes 7-12, 8.5 (out of 10) stars.
