Is Flashback a trap?

Lets talk about flashback.

Many people with me who saw this card went a little nuts at the idea of a 1 mana snapcaster mage without a body. It triggers prowess, its 50% more efficient than snap mage, in fact the only way they could make it more efficient would be if they made it free/gave the card itself flashback.

But somewhere in the back of my mind theres a voice going “aren’t you overstating its usefulness?” And I have to explore that thought for a bit.

Lets list some cons:

- doesn’t work with free spells

- doesn’t work with overload

- is a dead card in isolation

If you look at the above, flashback on a counter would now make most mana efficient counters a tad uncomfortably expensive. Why not just slot in the extra counter? Or the situation of it being a bit uncomfortable in your opening hand where you’d rather have an actual thing to cast.

Obviously I am looking for cons here now, since the pros are absolutely there. In edh, the higher your bracket the better the card. And in general, this card is super power creep resistant. In fact, this card only grows in power with creep. I’m not sure how its being discussed and tested in legacy and vintage but I can imagine this card opens up some unique play lines that weren’t quite there prior to its existence.

So lets discuss, is this card a trap? Or are we looking an easy 10-20x from where we are right now?
