How did you manage to leash train

Stanley is a little over a year, we think. Rescued 6 months ago from a reputable weim specific shelter. They probably embellished his age a little but that isn't of much concern. His history was not shared with us outside of him not having any consistency, they think..

He didn't spend too long in shelters but any amount at a young age is a missed opportunity at best.

Anyway, we spent the cold Chicago winter walking as much as we could. He wasn't too keen on the cold. Additionally, not many people to distract him on our route. Now that it's nice he seems to have doubled his need to exercise and is much less willing to walk somewhat decently on his leash.

We use a pull deterrent harness and 6' leash to walk. He's not my first weim but my first was around before kids so weim #1 got long, long off leash walks with regular swimming so energy and pulling was never an issue for us.

Now with kids we play and walk enough but he still is wound up when it's time to get going leading to erratic pulling and unwillingness to chill. Plus I'm a bit older so I have to remind myself to be patient.

I've done the stop every few steps when he pulls to wait and proceed when the leash loosens.. we'll walk around the block and it'll take an hour.... I don't have the time to manage everything and continue this as there's been very little of any progress. The opportunity to walk off leash is gone since I can't take him to any off leash parks as often like I did with my first weim.

Aside from continuing this seemingly unsuccessful task of stopping every few steps.... Any tips or strategies I might try that could help?

He's gotten better at my company to stop eating goose poop so he's not a totally lost cause I suppose.... Getting frustrated that I can't give him the brisk walk he needs because he's literally hurting my wife and kids by pulling too hard and making walks no fun for me.

Also here's a picture of the loveable dingus
