Georgetown PD to implement Flock cameras
Missed this in the city council minutes. Have a read and post your thoughts below.
Lots of opinion here: Flock cameras seem like a great idea, but they're act a privacy nightmare, and the data can be shared with other governments, including the federal government. They're not just plate readers, they're vehicle profilers and trackers, and they track every vehicle that passes them.
I'll be writing to my city council member expressing my opposition, and GPD asking for their privacy and sharing policy for these cameras.
Some reasons I think Flock is a problem: https://www.aclu.org/news/privacy-technology/flock-roundup https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2025/12/effs-investigations-expose-flock-safetys-surveillance-abuses-2025-review https://www.npr.org/2026/02/17/nx-s1-5612825/flock-contracts-canceled-immigration-survillance-concerns
Flock's response. Note they gloss over the fact that an identified vehicle can be searched for all its appearances in the system. That is tracking: https://www.flocksafety.com/blog/why-are-some-flock-cameras-being-removed-by-cities
