We are so used to the Gregorian calendar that we forget it was basically made just to pay taxes to the Roman Empire. But the Hindu calendar is something else entirely. It is not just about tracking dates or economic activity. It is actually a map of how the human system responds to the solar system.
The Luni solar calendar is roughly 8000 to 12000 years old and it has basically never needed a patch or a leap year style fix because its based on actually watching the sky.
It even factors in the Precession of the Equinoxes which is that slight wobble the Earth makes. People figured this out way before telescopes were even a thing.
Panchangam: It literally means five limbs. It tracks five specific variables called
Tithi for the lunar day
Vara for the weekday and
Nakshatra for the stars
plus Yoga and Karana.
These arent just fancy words. They are factors that influence your mood and focus and energy levels every single day.
One of the coolest parts is why Purnima and Amavasya were the original weekends. In this civilization we didnt historically have Sundays off. We had Full Moon and New Moon off instead. The logic is simple. If the moon can move the entire ocean tides its obviously moving the fluids and electrical charges in your body too.
These days act like a volume knob for your system. If youre happy youre ecstatic but if youre a mess you feel it way more. We took those days off to stay still and keep our heads straight while the internal tides were surging.
The year is also split into two halves based on the Suns movement.
Uttarayana which is from January to June is the Northern Run. Studies actually show more neuronal growth and connections in the brain during this time. Its literally the season to blossom.
Dakshinayana from July to December which is meant for the inner cleanup like purification and Sadhana.
Also Hindu festivals are actually bio hacks. They arent just for belief. They are timed for when the Earths magnetic field shifts like during the Equinoxes. All those old school habits like putting castor oil on your head or eating specific seasonal greens were actually ways to keep your brains electrical circuit from frying when solar energy spikes.
The big takeaway is that the planets dont decide our fate but they definitely influence the weather inside our body.
The Panchangam just tells us which way the wind is blowing so we can ride the cycles instead of being crushed by them.
Does anyone else notice they get way more irritable or hyper around the Full Moon?
