Improving the MK8 Golf R’s stock audio
Week 1 with new Golf R 2026.
Love the car, not loving the Harman Kardon system. For something that comes in a $50k+ Golf R, the audio feels like it was tuned by someone who only listens to podcasts.. The center channel is thin, the mids get muddy, and the sub hits like it’s made of recycled Tupperware.
After way too many hours of reading threads, and convincing myself I’m not going full audiophile, I think I’ve finally landed on a simple upgrade path
Hertz Stage 1 (Competition) Center Channel https://rs-acoustics.com/products/mk8
Pretty much everyone says this fixes the weak center sound. Vocals get clearer, the front stage feels more “in front of you,” and you don’t need an amp or DSP to notice the difference. Easy win.
RS Acoustics GR8 Subwoofer - https://rs-acoustics.com/products/gr8
This one is new, which is exciting… but also means there aren’t many reviews yet. Still, it looks like the first sub that’s actually tuned for the MK8/MK8.5 HK system. Proper MDF box, Rockford P3 shallow driver, plug‑and‑play harness, and it’s designed to work well with the stock HK amp. Basically the OEM sub, but done correctly.
~$1k CAD all in.
Quick note on the ARS24 subs (Rock‑8, etc.)
Those are great options too, but they really need an amp (like the AIR‑2) to get the full impact out of them. On the stock HK amp, they work… but you’re only getting about half of what they can actually do. The GR8 seems like the better “OEM‑amp‑only” choice.
Hoping this combo finally makes the HK system sound like it belongs in a Golf R.
