Context:

- I’m a uk/aussie dual national, living in Melbourne with my partner who is just British
- we had a baby born in March that now has an Aussie passport and ETA
- baby is British by descent but does not have a uk passport (processing time for uk passport too close to flight date from when he was born)
- we are all travelling in early June to Glasgow so no time for certificate of entitlement, which we learned about at the weekend.

Question: do I travel on my British or Australian passport?

British passport - means I won’t be asked about an ETA but may alert airport staff that two British citizens are travelling with an Aussie baby (even though he has an ETA) so may ask about his British citizenship

Aussie passport - may make more sense at the front desk as his citizenship/ connection to us can be explained more easily, without divulging he is a British citizen by birth.

Lastly, am I overthinking this?

Thank you

Sorry! Another dual nationality post. This is the ridiculous situation many dual nationals are going to be in, especially going into the summer months with much more international travel expected. My reading of it is that if they had got an ETA for their baby it would very likely have been fine. The issue was that the Austrian passport said born in the uk on it but they didn’t have the correct/ any uk travel documents (like a passport or certificate of entitlement). If the child had got an ETA, this problem would likely have been avoided, but once the authorities were alerted to the child’s citizenship, the couple could not get the ETA. Seems extremely harsh and over the top to me. This, coupled with the new entry/ exit requirements for going to the EU from the uk, is going to cause absolute chaos in airports this year. But of course the home office said it’s not their problem or fault!

Hi there,
I have an 8 week old baby, born in Australia, that is British by descent due to me and my partner holding British citizenship and is Australian because I have Australian citizenship. We are due to fly from Australia into the uk in 5 weeks but my son will only have his Australian passport. Will an ETA suffice for him? How much do they check/ are they able to see when we hand over our passports? We have not had enough time to get him a British passport or certificate of entitlement before flying. We booked the flights months ago and have since learned of the new rules for dual citizens coming into the uk needing to present their British passport. Fine for my partner and I but surely they won’t prevent us flying due to my newborn not having obtained effectively two passports in 8 weeks. Has anyone had any experience of this? This is causing us immense stress because we have had this trip booked for a long time for him to meet his extended family for the first time. Any experience or help would be hugely appreciated. Thanks
