In 1993, a Chinese director killed a real decorated military dog on camera for “realism”
For the war film 犬王 (King of Dogs), director Yao Shougang secretly swapped the prop explosive for a real bomb and strapped it to Hailong — a military dog who had earned a third-class merit citation. He filmed the dog being blown apart using three cameras to make sure he got the shot in one take. His justification? “To reduce suffering, it had to die in one go.”
The dog’s handler — who wasn’t told what was happening — broke down watching the footage.
The story resurfaced in 2008 when Yao casually recounted it on a TV show, seemingly without remorse. The internet exploded. The film now sits at 2.1/10 on Chinese rating platforms, one of the lowest-rated films in Chinese cinema history, and Yao’s entire filmography got review-bombed.
