Confused about why people say Lux is religious
I loved the album!!
I had the expectation that the album was going to be religious or at least spiritual since that's what a lot of people seem to be getting from it.
I could be talking all day about it, there are so many references and cultural details. The whole thing is cheeky and teasing all over, but also beautiful and very wholesome.
So,
I'm Spanish and I'm really confused by how people perceive this album as intensely religious. Sure, there is religious imagery like the rosary (used in a nonreligious way), but I just listened to the whole album with lyrics and to me it sounds like the opposite of religious.
Just a few examples:
- One of the verses that is repeated several times in sexo, violencia y llantas says:
Primero amaré al mundo, y luego amaré a dios.
I will love the world first, and I will love god later.
This is the opposite of what the bible says (loving god above all), and puts the focus on the world, god comes later (if at all).
Another song is called "God is a stalker", and the lyrics go in the direction you would expect from the title, the verses are actually quite cheeky, they were really fun to listen to.
Another one (de madrugá) says:
The cross on my chest
Calibrates my body
To satisfy myself (the word "desquitarse" means to get satisfaction by fulfilling some compensation, seeking revenge, getting even; the word sounds like selfishly relieving a tension in Spanish)
I am entitled to it (have the right to)
The verses are saying: I can selfishly seek satisfaction, I have the right, the cross on my chest balances things out.
This sounds exactly like the kind of thought process that a specific type of Catholic person has, but it also tells the story of a woman who seeking revenge killed 5000 men. It describes very human passions, not religious purity or spirituality.
- Also, the album photo has her trapped within white religious clothing, her arms crossed under the fabric of the dress unable to move.
Overall, the album is full of references, little comments and a fun cheeky vibe all over, very teasing, which I loved!
