Marie-Noelle Ledru Cuvee du Goulte 2015 BdN

So I finally got to open my first bottle of Marie-Noelle Ledru. Her Blanc de Noirs Cuvee du Goulte from 2015 and yeah… I absolutely understand why for some she has that cult status

A bit of background: Marie-Noelle Ledru was basically the ultimate “if you know, you know” Champagne producer. Tiny production, old school as hell organic farming, almost zero intervention and then she retired in 2016. No new wine coming, barely any stock left and every bottle opened just makes the remaining supply more mythical. That scarcity has turned Ledru into absolute Champagne nerd catnip and probably one of the biggest cult-object producers in grower Champagne. Also, if you’ve ever seen interviews with her, she comes across like the nicest Champagne grandma imaginable.

The wine itself feels completely unpolished in the best way. 100% Pinot Noir from Ambonnay and it drinks more like serious wine first, Champagne second..gotta love that. But this one ain't definitely not trying to be a crowd pleaser though.

The nose was wild right away: blood orange, baked apple, dried flowers, chalk and this oxidative edge that gives it so much personality. Nothing feels polished or engineered and that’s exactly the point.

What stood out most was the texture and tension. On the palate it’s chalky, savory, structured and kinda stern at first, but it keeps opening and getting more interesting with air. It feels honest, alive and stubbornly individual. You really get the sense this came from one person’s stubborn vision instead of a committee, which feels very fitting overall coming from a Grande Dame like Ledru.

Totally understand why people hoard these now although the availability and the price definitely will not turn this into something I'd genuinely (want) to hoard. But if I'd stumble upon one again for a somewhat reasonable price - I'd be tempted. All in all, this is the kind of bottle that makes the grower Champagne people unbearable for a reason haha.
