Currently using Omnipod 5 + Dexcom G6, looking to switch before forced to switch to G7. What pump/CGM combos have you used?
Looking to hear both successes and shortcomings of different pump and CGM setups. I've only ever used Dexcom and Omnipod (been on Dexcom close to 10 years, and Omnipod around 4yrs).
I wrote up why I want to switch, what I'm looking for, & who I am below. But even if you don't necessarily have a personalized rec for me, I want to hear YOUR story. I know very little about other systems, and I definitely read here and other T1D related subs, but this gives me the chance to potentially have active back and forth convos around what people say. Thank you!!
Why am I looking to switch?
I tried the G7 when it first became compatible with the O5. I hated it. It has terrible connectivity to the O5, and really bad accuracy issues overall. I switched back tot he G6 immediately. I'm not interested in being a part of Dexcom forcing its customer base to switch to an inferior product just because they sank however many millions of dollars into R&D. I know some people love the G7 and I'm genuinely happy for you, but it didn't work for me at all.
For Omnipod, it's less of a single big thing and more that I've grown increasingly frustrated with their clunky algorithm over time. I can still make it work, but after several convos with my care team, it sounds like there are pumps with algorithms that are much more suited to what I need out of a pump.
Wants & needs out of a new system
- Dealbreaker: both must have iOS apps. I will not go back to carrying multiple devices!
- Dealbreaker: GGM & pump must natively work together. Self made loops are dope AF, don't get me wrong, but I'm looking to put less work, not more, into my diabetes management.
- What I love about the O5: It's tubeless. I know there really isn't another tubeless pump out there, but minimal tubing, pumps that are easily tucked away, etc, is my strong preference.
- What I love about the Dexcom: OK, the thing the G7 had going for it was the 20 min startup and the ability to overlap sensors. Also, I love how small it is.
- I don't need super long wear times. I'm good with my current 3 days on the pump and 10 days on the sensor. I tend to get site irritation if it sits on me longer than that, so eg the G7 15 day holds no appeal for me.
What I've looked at already
Medtronic Minimed Flex + Simplera Sync Sensor
- Pros: Looks sleek, is all built and controlled by Medtronic so no compatibility issues.
- Cons: Not out yet so I'd likely be an early adopter, meaning I get to "help" get rid of all the bugs once it hits the wider market.
Tandem T:slim x2 + Libre 3 Plus
- Pros: I've been strongly leaning towards switching to Libre anyway. It's just that the 3 plus doesn't work with Omnipod 5, so I'd need to switch pumps anyway.
- Cons: the T:slim pump controller thingy is so bulky. I do not like how large it is, it doesn't look like it can be easily tucked inside your clothing.
About me (in case any of this is relevant for suggestions)
- 41 F, diagnosed at age 11
- Decent but not excellent control (story of my life). 6.2 A1C, TIR is 61% (but my range is 70-150)
- One of the reasons why I'm fed up with O5 is because it keeps me at the 150 border, no matter what settings I adjust (please trust, I've looked into it).
- TDD hovers around 30 units (+/- 5)
- Not insanely active, but I do like to swim and I'm also a huge klutz (which is the biggest concern re: tubing).
