How did the Republic of Ireland react to the IRA and the Troubles?

Back during the Troubles (Bloody Sunday, assassination of Mountbatten, Armagh, etc.), how did people in the Republic of Ireland react to the issues? Did people not care as much? Did most people express support for the IRA? Was it easier for people to talk about it?

I’ve seen Scottish, Irish, and even some English surnames categorized as “Scots-Irish.” Is there a correct way to categorize a surname as Scots-Irish? Or is it a broad category?

Does anyone here remember when Lord Mountbatten was assassinated by the IRA in 1979 or other IRA bombings? How did this impact life in the UK at the time? Did it contribute to anti-Irish sentiment?

How do people in India view this moment in history? Do they believe it was justified? Do they believe the killing of British women and children went too far? Do they believe this was the first Indian war of independence?

Ireland was part of the United Kingdom during the height of the British Empire, similar to Scotland.

How were the Irish treated compared to other groups in the British Empire? For example, were the Irish treated similar to Indians or other groups? Did the British government look down on both Catholics and Protestants in Ireland?

My last name is Brady, which is a surname from Ireland. I have traced my Brady ancestry back to Randolph County, North Carolina in the 1700s and reached a dead end. I have no proof that my Brady ancestors moved to North Carolina from Ireland, but my ancestry DNA report tells me that I have ancestry in Northern Ireland.

What can you speculate with this info? Why do you think my ancestors left Ireland at this time? Can you tell if my ancestors were Catholic or Protestant based on the surname or is that impossible?

Thanks!
