First firearm! S&W 686+ 7 shot with 6" barrel

Just picked up my first revolver as the title says. It is my first firearm. I have handled firearms a decent amount and had basic safety training, but never owned one myself until now.

I have a question I have had trouble finding the answer to online. I understand this if firearm uses a hammer block to prevent accidental discharge. But I am unsure to to what extent this works. Is it possible to pull the hammer back only slightly and release it, causing a discharge? It is double action, and I know I can pull the hammer back to single action mode, but hypothetically, could the hammer be pulled back slightly on accident and then released to cause an accidental discharge?

I don't have a lot of experience with revolvers specifically, other than at a gun range, so I appreciate your expertise if you happen to know. Thank you!
