This 1953 MG TD started as a concours car… then turned into a supercharged “boy racer”

The MG TD was the car that got me into classics - not this particular car but a TD was my fathers first car.

This particular 1953 TD we bought in boxes, everything had been pulled apart, and we originally restored it as a concours car. It did quite a few shows, and won some awards and then we started to get over the concours scene.

We decided to instead turn it into a 1950's "boy racer" style TD. To do this we..

  • Supercharged the engine using a Toyota Blower with SU Carbs
  • Capacity increased to ~1410cc with internal upgrades
  • Installed a Sierra 5-speed gearbox
  • Changed to crossply tyres which we surprisingly found was one of the biggest handling improvements

To drive it still very much feels like a TD, just a bit more lively. Curious to see what the long-time MG lovers think, would you prefer to have a concours car that doesn't see much of the road or, a modified TD that is a bit more fun to drive and sees the road often.

Converted a classic Mini to electric, but kept it completely stock-looking.

We have just finished an EV conversion on a 1970's Mini and tried to take a different approach. Instead of making it obviously "electric" or modernising everything, the goal was to keep it looking and feeling as close to original as possible. We took this as far as leaving the fuel gauge to read "FUEL" except now it tracks battery.

We kept:

  • Original interior layout and styling
  • Factory-style gauges (now running off a modern system)
  • Original fuel cap with charge point hidden behind
  • No screens or obvious "modern" add-ons/upgrades

Underneath:

  • Tesla front wheel drive motor
  • Around 300HP/400Nm (power can be controlled remotely via your phone)
  • ~250km of range depending on usage
  • Battery packaging split into three across the car to maintain boot and interior space

We know it is a strange combination, visually it is a classic Mini but it drives like something completely different and we are curious to know where people land on this. Do you think converting a classic car to an EV in this way, without additional mod-cons, makes sense?
