The fraudsters got me

I got a text from AT&T letting me know that a request to move my number to a new service provider was received and about to occur. Moments later my service shut off. Turns out this happened to my Dad earlier today, but I had not heard about it due to the fact that he couldn't use his phone. I assume is how they got to me. I am still on his phone plan, and as the primary member, he is the one in contact with AT&T as we speak to figure out what we do.

Has anyone gone through this who can share what their experience was like? Were you able to get your number back? Were they successful in taking any money? Is there anything I should do to protect myself?

I've locked my cards/contacted my bank and lowered my transaction notification threshold as a precaution. I've been getting emails from Western Union, so they're trying, but unsuccessfully insofar as I can tell. I'm a bit at a loss because I'm not sure what they're able to access with my phone number only. As far as I can tell, my email is still fine. (but is it if western union is sending stuff to that email?)

Thanks in advance.
