did anyone else see this vid? I need to talk about this bc there is so much misleading info out there & I agree that just spreading “62M m*n are in an online rape academy” is harmful fear-mongering BUT seeing other leftists totally downplaying the core issues at play here when trying to debunk this is so infuriating.

here’s the comment I left on this vid that sums up my thoughts

“Idk I feel like this conversation isn’t totally nuanced, Taylor I like a lot of your content but you often fail at truthfully portraying multiple sides and being flippant about the core of the issues being presented because they don’t conform to your own preconceived biases.

Yes, it’s a problem that people think the solution to a lot of the issues caused by big tech is to completely forego online privacy and build a surveillance state instead, ofc it is. But at the same time, the pervasiveness of the current misogynistic culture online (and offline) IS a real problem, it’s a noticeable change from just 10yrs ago. We have to question the cause, which is obviously tied to algorithmic content that rewards the most extreme, rage-baiting content bc we know that’s what gets the most engagement.

Furthermore, we have seen a rise in sexual violence related to the rise of extreme bdsm and violent porn!! There are multiple recent studies that have found young women experience harmful choking & other violent sexual behaviors at an alarming rate compared to just 20yrs ago. To not acknowledge that is truly just ridiculous, and I can agree that more research needs to be done and that’s it’s not so cut and dry, we have to at least acknowledge that there IS a real problem here.

Extreme content gets pushed online bc it gets engagement, and often that is tied to extreme misogyny and racism, which ofc has a downstream effect in the culture which we are all currently experiencing. We need to find a solution to this, but we can’t do so when people on the left like you hand wave any concerns and call other leftists just idiotic for falling for Christian nationalist propaganda or puritans or whatever bullshit. Maybe steer the conversation to finding better regulations and solutions instead of just insulting people that do have valid concerns & pretending like those concerns are no big deal? If you’re not doing that then you’re just adding to the noise.”
