First Momotaro in postpartum body

TL;DR

Postpartum body, trying to be kinder to myself (and working through some body dysmorphia too). Got Momotaro Women Super Wide 11oz—comfortable, forgiving, and fits my current life. Great entry point for partners new to selvedge too. Also picked up the #001 Standard Type 1 jacket thanks to a review here—no regrets.

To begin with, I had my second born a little over a year ago. And somehow, even now, my body still doesn’t quite feel like my own—my pre-baby jeans definitely don’t fit me anymore. It’s been a mix of general anxiety, lack of sleep, and just the everyday juggling of childcare, housework, and work… so I decided I didn’t need the added stress of jeans sizing on top of everything else. (I’m also aware that some of this might lean into body dysmorphia, which I’m trying to work on slowly, alongside everything else.)

So instead of trying to make my body fit into my jeans, why not just wear jeans that fit my body? In an effort to make peace with myself and offer a bit more grace, I picked up a few pairs of my usual go-tos (Uniqlo and Nudie) with my current sizing. And then, this one: my first pair of Momotaro jeans.

I did try browsing through a few subreddits for references, and while I understand that raw/selvedge denim tends to lean more towards men, it was still a bit discouraging to see so few posts from women. So I thought maybe I could add one for the ladies.

I’ve had some experience with raw/selvedge denim before—APC and Flat Head, the usual suspects—but this is my first Momotaro. I’ve always known about their craftsmanship & quality, but never quite got the chance to try them. So I’m genuinely glad my first experience turned out to be such a good one.

I was excited to find that Momotaro released a wide and super wide range for women. With all the toddler chasing and errand running these days, I’ve grown quite partial to a more relaxed fit, so I opted for the lighter 11oz with one wash super wide. And honestly I feel it fits me perfectly.

A little long in the legs, but I’m pretending it’s a styling choice and not a proportion issue—I’m leaving it unhemmed for now and seeing how I feel about it over time. The high rise is especially forgiving (in the best way), and helps smooth things out around my “mum pouch” without feeling restrictive. The fabric feels soft but still substantial, breathable enough for daily wear, and not overly stiff like I remember heavier raws can be. It drapes nicely, moves well, and just… feels easy to live in. Which, at this stage of life, matters more than anything.

It’s also so versatile—I can dress it up a little or just throw it on for a day out with the kids and not think twice. There’s something quietly comforting about a piece that just works. I also feel like the wide cut and lighter fabric make it a great entry point, especially if you’re trying to introduce selvedge to your partner without overwhelming them.

Also, thanks to u/indigomonstera over at r/rawdenim, I ended up getting the exact #001 Standard Type 1 jacket as well—and she was absolutely right in her review. I won’t even try to add much here because she already put everything so eloquently. I went with size M for a more oversized look, and it works really well. Bonus: my partner can wear it too.

It’s been years—more than a decade, really—since I last owned selvedge/raw denim, and this time I’m not chasing fades or any sort of “target”. I’m taking it slow, wearing it as it is, and just letting it be part of my everyday. I’m just happy I found a quality pair of jeans that fit me, and make me feel like myself again. And I hope that’s enough.
