If you could maybe help me…

Me (17f) and my family have been living in Dubai since 2023. We’ve all technically had residency since 2015 and did live in the UAE between 2015 and 2019.

The reason me, my siblings, and my mom went back to Sudan between 2019 and 2022 is because of my mom’s job. You see, my mom has worked for a pretty big bank in Sudan (not sure if I should say the name) for the past 17 years, and was on unpaid leave for the 4 years we’d spent in the UAE until then. After the war started in Sudan, all the workers shifted online and we came back to the UAE, where my dad works.

Now, the bank is saying all its workers need to be back on site by June. This is obviously stressful for a number of reasons.

For one, Khartoum (the capital where my mom’s bank is) is not safe. The troops may have retreated, but crime is still rampant. Power outages and blackouts are frequent. And, more recently, there’s been a fuel crisis.

Moreover, I’m supposed to graduate next year. I can’t go back with my mom to Sudan and disrupt my education (I’m doing A levels. No schools in Khartoum currently provide year 13 teaching). I also can’t look after my 3 younger siblings on my own here in the UAE, and they’d suffer terribly being ripped away from the lives they’d only just begun rebuilding and the friends they’ve only just gotten comfortable with to go back to Sudan.

On the other hand, my mother can’t give up working. She refuses to become financially dependent on anyone or to live without her own stable income in her own two hands, and, obviously, I completely get and support that.

Together, we’ve applied to 150+ jobs here in the UAE over the course of the past 3 months, to no avail. She has 17 years of experience, she’s held a senior position for the past few years or so.

All of this, coupled with the ongoing tension here in the UAE, is just really really stressful. I’m not asking anyone to give her a job, though that would obviously be amazing. I just want to be led in the right direction. If anyone has any advice or knows if we can do anything that might better my mom’s chances, I’d really really appreciate it.

Thank you so much for reading:)
