my DM is setting his world in greyhawk, and he mentioned that my dark elf character would be from erelhei-cinlu— what would someone have to do in that society to be shunned/exiled?
the more women and queer people the better but i’m not very picky :)
more specifically, how were they viewed in the world of crime? you only really hear about male outlaws with the occasional exception, and why was that? if a woman wanted to be a gunslinger or simply a “hoodlum”, how would her fellow criminals treat her?
if a woman had children/a child, would she still be accepted into a brothel or parlor house? or would she be left to work independently?
hi, i’m writing a character for a historical fiction novel (wild west), and i personally like to develop the backstories of characters’ parents in addition to their own backstories. my character’s mother came to san francisco during the gold rush to look for her husband. her and her husband had been struggling in ireland due to the famine, and when she became pregnant, he wanted to secure a better life for their child. he said he would write in a few months when he arrived in california. a year passed with no word, so she left with her baby, and got a job in san francisco.
what would make the most sense? becoming a cook, laundress, etc. or becoming a prostitute? how hard was it to support yourself and a baby? due to the lack of women, did domestic roles pay well? or was prostitution the best option financially?
to provide context, this is the summer of 1850.
i know prostitution, but what else? the options seemed limited, especially if you had a child/children. what were the racial barriers for irish, chinese, etc.?
