So I just saw The Mummy (2026). And it was the worst movie I've ever seen in my entire life. As a lifelong horror aficionado I'm so angry I absolutely had to make this post and yes, I've made it long.
There's a few main reasons that I'm going to list, but first, some context:
I went to see this movie with a coworker after a particularly *interesting* day at work, and we caught a *very* late showing (10pm - 12pm showtime) so we could get dinner first. Neither of us had ever seen a trailer for it. In fact, the only reason *she* knew about the movie was because of a promotional casket she saw in LA related to it. We sat and powered through almost the entire movie but left near the very end because it was THAT bad. Neither she nor I could take another moment of that despicable, disrespectful, tactless trash that either of us have ever seen in our entire lives. And keep in mind I've watched SLENDERMAN, and that says something.
There will be some spoilers, I've never posted in this subreddit before so to keep true to the rules I've spoiler marked my explanations but left the titles of them open, if this violates the rules please let me know and I will fix it.
Now to the points.
- It's not a Mummy movie. >!That's right. Despite the name being THE MUMMY, it's not about a mummy. !<
- >!It's about a demon possessing a child. It felt like I was watching another installation of The Conjuring, if anything. Not only that, but the "mummification" was a ritual that the villains used to bind the demon into the child's body as a way to "seal" it in the beginning of the film. And Christianity still plays a major (if not most important) role in the movie. This WILL come up later so pay attention.!<
- Is it just me, or is anybody else sick of children being the main victims in horror movies, particularly in terms of possession?
- >!Not only that, but the sheer amount of torture that they showed ON SCREEN being inflicted upon a victim that is, in all reality, a CHILD is arguably one of the most tasteless, disgusting things I have ever had the displeasure of looking upon. Now look, I understand that sometimes media - especially horror media by it's nature - is meant to scare you, it's meant to present you the darkest parts of things, those scary little "what if's" and make you think "oh how could someone do that?" And yeah, sometimes that "how could someone do that" is disgusting in nature. That's one thing. But given the current climate of the world and everything that's come to light recently in the news and among us internet netizens, is it REALLY necessary to have a CHILD be the victim? Again? It's played out, and in my opinion, tactless. Utterly and completely. My mind will not be changed about this. It's the reason I won't be seeing Weapons, or Ice Cream Man, nor will I be finishing Terrifier 2.!<
- To touch on the point of Christianity in horror media - and how it relates to The Mummy (2026), and as it relates to Blumhouse as well.
>!It feels like that's the ONLY religion that they respect. I know people personally who follow the Egyptian Pantheon, who still pray to those Gods and Goddesses that have paved their stories through Egypt and beyond. Mummification, in historical context, was an HONORABLE death ritual. It was NEVER used to seal things away, rather than to protect the dead and preserve them in a state. Mummies were REAL people, Mummies were, at one point, a baby, a child, a teenager, an adult, they were people who had lives and families and they were honored in their death by being buried with artifacts of things they loved, pets, money, all of it. Yet here comes Blumhouse productions and the director Lee Cronin twisting it into what turned out to be another Conjuring story. There's a scene in the movie in particular that is a ONE TO ONE of the Conjuring movie, but the victim in this case was a child. (See my previous point, please.) There was no respect to the actual real mummification process, no research, not even an INKLING of it. They merely changed the name of the monster from Demon to the Nasmaranian, which is a completely FICTIONAL MONSTER. IT'S NOT EVEN REAL! They used The Mummy creature as a means to tell another Conjuring-esque story, disregarded any and \*all\* religious and historical contexts, and had the nerve to market this movie as a mummy movie.!<
- It's. Not. A. Mummy. Movie. >!It's a Koshary-coated Conjuring Movie.!<
>!Did you know that victorian-era people ate mummies? They consumed this "Mumia"- again real, dead people, - by grounding up and using DEAD PEOPLE as seasonings, mixed into teas, and claimed it had "medicinal properties". Why not use that? Why not make a mummy movie where the mummy comes back from the grave, seeking to steal what was stolen from them? Oh, it's been done before? Particularly in the 90s? GUESS WHAT, SO HAS CHILDREN BEING POSSESSED BY DEMONS! There's The Exorcist, The Omen, Insidious, The Conjuring 2 for fuck's sake! And those are just the ones I remember off the top of my head!!<
>!We can have a good, modern mummy movie that isn't child-torture, demon-hunting, Christianity-Is-The-Only-Religion-Worth-Representing slop that I had the utter displeasure of watching.!<
Too Long / Didn't Read: >!Koshary (Egyptian Curry) Conjuring slop film, similar premise and scene as The Conjuring, uninspired story, and all in all, the worst movie I've ever seen in my entire life.!<
