New to knitting and surprised at the high cost of yarn

I started knitting in the last few months and quickly became hooked. Ive made a few hats and made tons of swatches with different stitches. Its been such a lovely way to detox from mindless phone use. I finally felt ready to tackle a sweater and went to a local knitting store to get yarn. It was the most lovely experience, the employee was SO helpful (even held my baby while I was being indecisive), and the folks at the knitting table were so kind. I then had kind of a gut punch moment when I mentally added up that the cost for the cheapest was going to be nearly $150 for all I needed. I wanted to pay it out of respect for all of their time but just couldn't swing it this month. It kind of took the wind out of my sails.

How is everyone affording all of their awesome projects? Do you just go for the big name stores materials or are you just spending a ton? I want to support local but damn...
