I'm about 5 hrs from Chicago, and about 4 hrs from the lake. Does anyone surf fish at the lakes? Where and what do u catch?

So I have been making an H-L rig at home and taking them to the beach with me. For whatever reason, they break often during the casting. They all break at the line, sometime in the middle, sometimes at the T knot. I think I'm using 40 lbs from Walmart. Should I get a better brand or step up to 50 lbs?
