We have had a persistent pungent smell in our bathroom for two years (with no let up). I can only describe it as boiled veg mixed with sewer. We have since gutted the bathroom and believe it is related to the soil stack.

The soil stack runs externally and then internally down through our kitchen cavity wall. I have opened access panels in the kitchen and confirm it does smell at all levels but is particularly worse in the bathroom.

Smoke test today did not show any leaks, but the drainage guy did mention this soil stack should not be capped off like this.

Could this be the root of our problem?
