"Kumita Ka Lang, Mag-Task Ka." Why Online Task Offers Are the Newest Scam Targeting Filipinos.
"Hi! Work from home opportunity. No experience needed. Mag-task ka lang, kumikita ka agad. May commission pa!"
If you've received this message — on Telegram, Messenger, or even SMS — stop. Do not click. Do not reply.
This is called a task scam, and it is now one of the fastest-growing fraud schemes targeting Filipinos online.
Here is how it works: Scammers pose as recruiters, merchants, or online platforms. They promise easy income for completing simple tasks — liking posts, rating products, boosting reviews. Then, once you're in, they manipulate you into transferring your own money under the promise of bigger commissions or withdrawals that never come.
Victims are later manipulated into transferring funds under the false promise of higher commissions or withdrawals.
GCash is now actively fighting back. Since 2025 to date, GCash has closed over 3.3 million scam-linked wallets. When a scam is reported, the receiving wallet is flagged — and often leads to an entire network that GCash can identify and shut down.
How to spot a task scam before it's too late:
• The job offer arrived out of nowhere — via SMS, email, or cold message
• No resume, no interview, no experience required
• The "pay" sounds way too high for the effort involved
• They eventually ask you to send money first before you can "withdraw" your earnings
The rule: No legit employer asks you to pay to get paid.
GCash will never ask for your MPIN or OTP via call, SMS, email, or social media. Do not let others use your GCash account for any transaction, and do not use the GCash account of other people as well.
Under AFASA (RA 12010), even allowing your account to be used for these transactions can result in criminal liability — whether you knew the money was from scams or not.
If you receive a suspicious task offer:
• Do not engage or send any money
• Report it to GCash via the app → Help Center → "I want to report a scam"
• File a report with the NBI at (02) 8523-8231 or the PNP Anti-Cybercrime Group
Your GCash wallet is a financial tool — treat it like your ATM card. Guard it, use it only for yourself, and never let "easy money" become expensive.
