Honest Review of 3 premium Indian matcha brands
Since many people wanted a review after my previous post - https://www.reddit.com/r/MatchaIndia/s/hweIrpIg0Q
Here’s my comparison of the premium Indian matcha brands I’ve personally tried: Noon, Kamashh, and Cowcat. I’ve also tried one authentic Japanese matcha, so I do have a rough comparison point.
Before starting, just want to mention that I only consume matcha in latte form. I usually use around 2 to 3g matcha in 250 to 300ml latte, so this review is purely based on my personal experience and preference. I’m mainly comparing things like consistency, taste, quality for the price, and overall experience from a regular consumer perspective, especially for beginners who are trying to find good matcha brands in India. In no way I claim to be an expert.
Here we go!
Noon Ceremonial:
This was the first premium Indian matcha I tried last year, and honestly it felt too bland for me. Even when I used 4g, I still couldn’t get much flavour out of it. That said, it was smooth and slightly sweet, which some people may actually prefer. The color wasn’t very bright and there was almost no vegetal aroma. It was very easy to make microfoam with it and there was no bitter aftertaste at all. Packaging has improved now, so I won’t comment much on that because when I ordered, it was different. Personally it wasn’t for me, though I do like their Hojicha. If you prefer sweeter and lighter matcha that’s not too strong and still budget friendly, you can consider this one.
Kamashh Ceremonial Gold:
Packaging was good, color was bright, texture was smooth, and again no strong vegetal aroma. It was easy to make microfoam with this too. What stood out to me was the flavour strength. Even with just 2 to 3g, the matcha flavour was quite noticeable in latte form. It was smooth, slightly sweet, and had no bitter aftertaste. Considering the price range, I honestly think this one gives really good value. Strong flavour without needing a lot of product, which automatically makes it more economical too.
Cowcat Matcha:
The outer packaging box was good, but there was still some spillage from the inner foil packet. The color was bright, texture smooth, and it was easy to sift. Taste wise, it felt quite similar to Kamashh to me, especially in terms of flavour strength. My main issue was the pricing. For that price range, I expected a much stronger and more unique matcha experience. The quantity is less and personally I didn’t find it economical. I wouldn’t say they’re offering anything extraordinary compared to other existing brands. Maybe my expectations became too high because of how overhyped it is on this sub 😅
Overall:
If you want a strong flavoured premium matcha at a more economical price among these three, I would personally recommend Kamashh.
One more thing I noticed: both Noon and Kamashh did have oxidation issues if kept at room temperature for longer periods. I still cannot comment on Cowcat regarding this because it literally got delivered today, so I haven’t tested that aspect yet. May be someone here can let us know about this. Additionally, I believe oxidation issue is only with Indian brands bcz I did not face this with Marukyu koyamaen. I actually kept that tin for 3-4months or even longer at room temp, I wasn't drinking matcha that time due to consistent sickness.
