First go at blacking the cherries

Ignore the sloppy lace gap, they’re new and ive got fat feet.

Stupid question but how exactly do you go about it? I bull my black 1490s to a mirror shine and I realized if I do that on a pair of cherries all the layers will probably darken up the toe and heel counter too much while leaving the rest of the boot too bright. So does anybody have any experience doing this? I imagine it would involve rotating layers of red and black. Thanks.
