Do I need to let my insurance know about my kids?

I don't think I have ever actually told them I have a kid in my household (not driving age, he is 4) and my policies are 10 years old so when I signed up there were no kids, but some people say I need to? Never thought about it so.... my insurance knows about my husband (and vice versa, separate policy same household)

For both home and auto insurance.
