‘You lose yourself’: inside the mental health crisis hitting gen X women

This is worth a read.

“We’re constantly trying to change things. Look at periods: everyone’s talking about their luteal phases now. That’s because we paved the way for being more open about that stuff. Same with menopause.”

Comparison between Shoresy and The League and other trash talking shows

I have seen a lot of people recommend The League over the years. It seems to have a lot in common with Shoresy, with lots of trash talking and dirty inside jokes amongst a group of sports obsessed friends. There were some good jokes and Nick Kroll is hilarious as always, but I was left with sort of a sad feeling after watching a few episodes.

I think the reason why I didn’t love it is because the characters are just full on mean to each other. There is a lot of kicking people when they are down. And the women fall too often into the roles of nagging wife, gold digging slut, or just general killers of fun. I only made it through a few episodes before I gave up, so maybe things get better. But I just didn’t like the characters, and I had a hard time caring about them or what happened to them. It’s not just The League. So many sitcoms are just people insulting each other for 22 minutes. Why are these people friends with each other, or romantically involved when they treat each other with contempt?

I think that’s what’s refreshing about Shoresy. The trash talking is no holds barred, but there is a kindness and clear boundaries that keep it from being mean.

Feel good shows and media

I’ve been in a flare for a couple of weeks now, which means one never ending migraine with flashing lights, nausea, dizziness, and pain. When I can deal with screens, I have been watching Shoresy on Hulu and Top Chef. I don’t do well with stuff with high stakes and lots of emotions in a flare. I sometimes watch the Airplane and Naked Gun movies, Parks & Rec, or 30 Rock. I’ve also been reading James Herriott’s All Creatures Great and Small, listening to true crime podcasts, and reading some fairy smut romance novels. What do y’all do to distract and cheer yourselves up?

Where I live, we have a steady stream of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Mormons, and other religious people who ignore our No Soliciting signs and bang on the door, scaring our rescue dog and interrupting our WFH jobs. We have tried everything, but I finally cracked the code: “My family and I worship Satan. We are members of the Satanic church. So, we are all good on spirituality here.” They practically race off the porch. It’s been almost a year since I did this with our local JW chapter and my neighbors are still getting hit, but no knocks on our door. Thank you, SNL and Dana Carvey’s Church Lady for the inspiration when I was watching old sketches recently 😇

ETA - We have two No Soliciting Signs, one at the top of the driveway and one at the front door. When I pointed out the signs, the JWs said they are not soliciting because they are trying to GIVE me eternal life. I am quoting.

F51, 5’5, started January 2025 at 285 lbs, and am down to 210 right now. Went from a size 22 to a size 14. I’m not 💯 about my highest weight. I stopped weighing myself when I got really big. Life is so much better! I dealt with eating disorders my whole life and had always been up and down the scale. When my health got bad and I couldn’t exercise as much and I used food as a crutch, I hit my highest weight. Amazing NSV achievements - no more sleep apnea, A1C went from pre diabetic to normal, blood pressure from high to normal, and I no longer get out of breath. My doctor is super happy about my progress and says to keep doing what I’m doing.

Here’s my question. I’m a really slow responder, and I know it’s because I can’t exercise as much as I’d like to/should. Because I have a disabling migraine most days, my exercise is walking the dog and gardening. I’m medically retired from the migraines, and yes, I’ve tried everything there is to try and am under the care of a good doctor. I do a 45-minute walk probably 4-5 days a week, but there are weeks where it’s only a couple of days I get a full walk in, and days I only do 10-15 minutes or I can’t get out of bed. My weight training is gardening, which I do 1-2 days a week. I’ve started doing a little yoga again. I used to teach Ashtanga before I got sick, and have started doing a short version of Series 1 when I can. Is anyone else dealing with chronic, energy limiting illnesses? What do you do about protein, exercise, all of it?

All I see on subs like this are people talking about eat protein, lift heavy, and exercise hard. I love exercise, but the gym with the lights, smells, and noises is a migraine trigger. I do my best with protein, but nausea is a major symptom of my migraines, and it’s hard to get it in some days. All of this has made me a slow responder. Ideally, I’d like to be down to maybe 160, but I’d be happy just get to one-derland. What are folks in my position doing?
