Context
Our home was built in the 1940s, is in the southeast usa, and has plaster walls. The area in question is in the stairwell. Near the stairs, and area has been separating and chipping off. There are no water pipes in this location and as you approach the ceiling, the problem seems to end (see photos).
The upstairs portion of the house gets hot as heck in the summer. We run mini splits in the evening to cool, but the stairwell doesn't receive a lot of air.
Any thoughts?
