Shatner's strange dedication

I was remembering one of my favorite BTS moments from TOS. Thinking back now it seems...weird.

Filming Devil in the Dark, and during lunch Shatner gets a call that his dad died. They continue filming after lunch and when Spock is mind melding with thw Horta and yells "Pain!" Shatner days "Somebody get this Vulcan an aspirin."

At least thats they way Bill told it in Star Trek Memories. Now I don't know what kind of relationship he had with his dad, but if it were me I wouldn't go back to work. I would be crying. I guess everyone mourns differently.

As a kid when I read this, i thought it was hilarious. As an adult...kind of weird.

Like a warm hug at the end of a sh*tty day

I just started watching this show but I love it. When I've had a bad day this show is there. When I'm missing my late wife, this show makws me feel better. Lorelai's sense of humor, especially with her mother, always makes me laugh.

To me it's like a warm hug at the end of a sh*tty day.

What is "the river?"

I have read all 7 books and listened to the audiobooks but only partway through book 7. Despite all that I'm stull confused exactly "the river" is.

Is it a metaphor for the lingering voice of doubt in his mind? Or is it some debuff that has been afflicted on him?

The Pitt has ruined other medical shows for me

Pretty much all my shows are on summer hiatus so Im watching Untold Stories of the ER. After watching The Pitt, everything else just seems...inferior.

To paraphrase an old rental car commercial:

*When it comes to medical dramas, there's The Pitt and then there's "not exactly."*

TIL The Klingons are guilty of cultural appropriation

According to a trivia book I have the Klingon phrase "Today is a good day to die" originated with several different Natuve American nations. This Wikipedia article seems to confirm that.

Chekov's station in TMP?

So ive got this electorinc star trek trivia book. 2500 questions covering everything Star Trek from beginning to the end of Enterprise and/or Nemesis. (Whichever came last)

So far I have answered 508 out of 2500 questions with 292 correct for an average of about 57%

There was one question recently that I have a problem with the "correct" answer. The question was What was Chekov's station in TMP? I said weapons but was told the correct answer was helm. That cant be right. I remember the scene with the warp distortion and the asteroid. They had to fire a torpedo because the phasers were channeled through the warp drive (because some idiot didnt ask Scotty before redesigning the whole phaser array). It was Chelov at the back station who fired the torpedo. Besides helm was Sulus station.

The more I think about it, the more I'm convinced tjat the Tamarians have two languages:

The metaphorical Darmok stuff is mainly used by their First Contact Specialists. They use it to help convey the big stuff like peace and friendship. BUT they come with animated short films like "Darnok and Jalaad at Tenagra", to aid in the understanding of the reference. This makes first contact easier because it circumvents the unavoidable hiccups that always happen with the universal translator.

(Side note: Shaka, When the Walls Fell is quite funny. Picture a Charlie Chaplin type guy as a military commander trying to defend his base. The first thing he does is sound the warning alarm thats meant to try and scare the attackers away because its really loud and sounds like a huge beast. Unfortunately, the speakers were pointed the wrong way (i.e. back towards the base) and when the warning sounded it blew the walls down)

Anyway, where was I? Oh yeah first contact. Capt. Dathon thought he could be a First Contact Specialist without the proper training and the short films. Thus he ended up being a real life Shaka.

Once first contact is made with a custom We come peace video, then they start using their normal language because the metaphors will only take you so far.

"Your mother should've dribbled you back out on the truck stop bathroom floor."

I think she says it to Ren but im not sure.

Either way, it just seems out of character for her. She tends to be more creative on her insults. Even when she was taking jabs at Prince Maestro she was creative rather than crass.

It doesnt even seem like a Carl insult either.

Is this something she might've gotten from Bea?

Quinto leaned waaaay into the pure vulcan logic (and we all saw how that worked out for him)

Peck on the other hand...well as much as i like him MUCH more than Quinto, he's just sort of there. He doesn't stand out like Nimoy did. He's just a little too quiet. I dont know if its the acting or the writing. He's just too subtle. Nimoy didnt necessarily draw attention to himself or try to steal the spotlight, but he certainly *acted.*

Neither one will ever be as good as Nimoy (obviously). But right now I would take Peck over Quinto.
