Split screen vs. Intercutting.

There's a section in a crime thriller project which hasn't been shot yet, but still thinking of shooting it for the edit.

There are two events happening simultaneously with a ticking clock at different locations, and I could do two oners for both and have a split screen, so the timing can be in real time, more so.

Or I could just intercut between the two, singular screen for each.  The sequence would be about one to two minutes.

This would take away the oner aspect, but how do you decide which is the best way to do it in this case?

Thank you very much for any input on this!  I really appreciate it!

How long should I delay the inciting incident for sensitivity?

For a crime story set in modern times, the story is about a detective wanting to bring down a group that is committing a series of kidnappings and sexual assaults, and they are doing it out of revenge related motives.

However, because of the sensitivity of the dark subject matter, I am thinking of delaying the inciting incident until later on that it can be and restructuring the story so it comes more later.

Either that I open on it, since most crime/detective thrillers, traditionally open on the first crime to start things off.

But what is best in this case, when wanting to be sensitive but at the same time, wanting to get the plot ball rolling not too slowly either?

Thank you very much for any input on this! I really appreciate it!

How do you write a realistic enough police thriller, but make the locations interesting still, in this case?

For a crime thriller set in modern times, in my police research, it's really hard to come up with reasons as to why a detective investigating a case, would leave the police station much, since I feel it would be less interesting, to have a story where so much of it is restricted to inside the station.

But according to real research, a detective rarely has to leave the building and can solve most cases logically through phone calls, etc.

One idea for example, was to show a police funeral of a murdered officer, to show some turmoil the main character is wrestling with.

But then you reader will ask since when do they have time to pause for a funeral, when they have to not let the current leads slip out of their hands, etc.

So I am trying to come up with realistic reasons for a detective to leave the building but having trouble, unless I should just take dramatic license more?

Thank you very much for any input on this! I really appreciate it!

What are the legalities as to what a hospital can do in this case?

In the episode with the measles boy, the parents do not want the doctors to do the spinal tap, possibly for religious beliefs.

However, in real life legalities, if doctors tell parents that their kid will die unless they perform a certain procedure and then the parents say, 'okay, then he dies', is that it legally, and the doctors have no choice but to wait for the kid to die, or is there anything else that can be done at that point, if the parents keep saying no till the kid dies?

How do you do a cut to black, without it coming off as a 'patch up'?
