Hi, all. Around a year and a half ago I was very lucky to buy this mysterious, seemingly custom-built bike off of a metal-scrapper.
Its too small for me and doesn't come with a functional set of wheels (missing the front wheel, and rear wheel is tubular and poorly built).
Anyways, it has an eclectic mix of Campagnolo parts which I've attempted to identify, but very frustratingly, Campy didn't seem to be a fan of stamping parts numbers or groupset names in this era... Soooo it's all a bit of a mystery.
What I have so far:
Brake calipers: "Mirage monoplanar."
Crankset: stamped "93", perhaps Campagnolo C-Record? Has the same self-extractors and a fairly polished finish.
Aero Seatpost: I'm not sure. Record or C-record of the early 90's?? There is a helical knurling on the clamp bolt, I vaguely recall reading somewhere that that was an indicator of a higher level seatpost, but I can't find that source now.
Headset: no clue. It has square wrench flats as many Campy headsets of this era did. I was comparing to a Athena-equipped '89 Bianchi I recently bought, and the whole headset seems taller. Maybe larger bearings? Not sure.
Rear derailleur: Record, but not sure what years. Browsing Disraeli gears, maybe a 1995 rd31-re?
Front derailleur: I'm just going to guess Early 90's C-Record. Really haven't done much comparison or research here, though
Shifters; front derailleur is friction and rear is 7sp indexed. No weird doohickey so not Syncro 1, but it doesn't have the knurled knob some of the syncro2 shifters have?
Wheel hub: Sheriff star
Freewheel: Super record aluminum/titanium 6 speed
Thanks 😊
Hi all, just wanted to make a follow-up to a "should I buy" post I made a couple weeks ago.
I bought this at a local shop's annual consignment sale. It was listed as an Eros, but knowing that Columbus SLX was top-end at the time, I suspected it was a bit higher up in the lineup. It has an SLX frame and what appears to be Campagnolo Athena, so it would have been third in Bianchi's lineup at the time behind the Mondiale and Supper leggera. I'm 97% certain that it is an '89 Giro, but strangely it does lack the model name and pantographing on the BB shell and seatstay caps. Not sure what's up with that.
It appears to have seen very little use, and the tires appear to have been original- the same as is listed in old catalog scans. I'm assuming it was used for a year or two and then stored away in an attic for a few decades.
I've cleaned it up and trued/serviced the wheels, but still need to do a more thorough overhaul to the other bearings, service the brakes/pads, possibly replace cables and housings, etc.
Hi, just wanted to post an update to a "should I buy" post I had made a couple weeks ago.
After cleaning the bike up a bit, servicing and truing the wheels, and installing some nice new tires, it's looking absolutely stunning. I do still need to do a more comprehensive overhaul, such as servicing the headset, BB, brake pads, new cables and housings and such.
Based on the serial number and parts, this appears to be a 1989 Bianchi Giro, although it's a bit funky as there is no model name on it and and it lacks the BB and seatstay caps pantographing that others have.
I was taking my cat for a late-night walk, when she stopped following me and seemed really interested in this clump of plants. I'm assuming this is catnip? I've given her dried store-bought nip in the past, but she showed zero interest.
