I have been weak, fatigued, urinating more than usual so I saw my primary physician..The following blood tests were elevated :
Calcium
Chloride
Alkaline Phosphatase
BUN/Creatinine Ratio

Because of the high calcium level, my physician ordered ionized calcium and pth labs.

My results were
Ionized calcium 1.34 mmol which is about 5.3 mg
PTH 82 pg

I saw these results in the portal over the weekend and messaged my friend’s husband who is a family practice physician. He said I should ask for a referral to an endocrinologist as it could indicate a problem with parathyroid.

My primary physicians office called this morning and said my ionized calcium and pth were normal. I question whether I could possibly indicate a problem with my parathyroid, and need to be referred to an endocrinologist, and they said no that everything was fine.

So now I put my numbers into the calcium pro app, and it shows highly likely to have hyperthyroidism. So I called to make an appointment with an endocrinologist and they said I can’t be seen unless I have a referral.

Any suggestions on how to go about getting in to see a specialist? Or do these numbers look like not something you might see in hyperparathyroidism?

I apologize in advance that this is so long, but we need some urgent advice, and felt like we needed to give a detailed explanation of what happened. 
( also, very curious to hear if anyone else has had a similar experience to what happened to us tonight. Or if what happened to us is an anomaly.)

We have a teenager who has had some rage issues in the past. Had a short psychiatric hospitalization a couple of months ago. Was experiencing psychosis at that time and while the psychosis is mostly better, it’s not completely gone. They’re still a little confused about certain things. 

The teen has been going on violent rampages recently with increasing frequency, several times in the past two weeks . This  teen spiraled out of control to a totally new level today.  They became completely out of control, breaking and throwing things with no regard for those around them. Someone easily could’ve gotten hurt severely, as the teen was throwing and breaking things indiscriminately. 
The teen also threw  glass items which shattered and spread glass everywhere which could’ve easily hurt someone. It was like watching someone who was possessed by a demon. they had absolutely no self-control and didn’t seem like they could even stop if they wanted to.

We ended up calling the police because we knew this was very dangerous and someone could get hurt. The police came and were very professional. They recognized that the teen needed immediate help . They told us to take the teen to the children’s behavioral health crisis center, and that childrens would be able to  help the teen. They were even able to talk the teen into getting into our car and going voluntarily, versus law enforcement having to transport the teen there. 

After childrens talked  to the teen and the teen’s parent, they told us that the teen  didn’t meet the criteria for a 24 hour hold because the teen  hadn’t threatened suicide or made a verbal homicidal threat,  so they were unwilling to even observe the teen for 24 hours. 

But  we knew we couldn’t take the teen safely home, for the teens own safety , as well as the safety of others. The teen is  unpredictable and unstable.

When we had arrived at the ER, the teen threw their phone on the ground, shattered it, and then got cut on the phone and then threw it over a railing. 

We also knew we couldn’t take the teen home with younger siblings in the home because it wouldn’t be safe for them with the teen there. 

One of the family members asked a staff member about the teen being a danger to others , and why that didn’t matter. Their response was asking us why we didn’t have the police arrest the teen . The answer to that is because both the police and us knew that the teen needed help. Getting arrested is not going to help someone who is mentally ill. in fact, the police never even mentioned possibly arresting the teen. The approach was focused on getting the teen help.

The person said they would go talk to the other staff, but never did because immediately the other staff came out with the teen and said they were discharged.
We did not feel comfortable with the teen going home with younger siblings in the house. We didn’t even feel comfortable with the teen in our car. ( the teen has gotten out of a moving vehicle before, and also was banging on things in the car on the way to the hospital). 
We said we were going to try and find someone else to take the teen until we can get the teen help. The  teen was upset about that and said we needed to take them home and then  kicked one of us hard. The hospital staff saw the teen kick the person but said it didn’t meet the criteria either. Obviously had it been a toddler sibling instead of an adult that was kicked it could’ve hurt them severely.

I felt like the staff was extremely rude and uncaring. We have never encountered a staff at Childrens who has come across as uncaring or rude. So we are not sure if the teen convinced them that they were fine and that we  had exaggerated the danger that the teen presented, or what? They seemed to already have their minds made up on discharging the teen before they even talked to the teen’s  parent.

We are shocked and saddened that this teen could not get the help they need, and that other people are being put into danger. 
When the parent talked about not being able to take the teen home, the parent was told that then the hospital would have to call the Omaha Police Department and report it as abandonment. In retrospect, we wish we would have stayed there and told them to call the police and then explain the danger to the police. Couldn’t we  get in trouble  if we knowingly allowed a dangerous person in the home and then one of the younger children got hurt?

When we said that it wasn’t safe for the teen to be  with younger siblings and that we were calling around to find a place for the teen to stay, they  told us we would have to go outside to make those calls and to let them know when we had come up with a plan. 
We made several calls, but nobody was able to take the teen ( or they were unwilling). 
So the plan we came up with was to move the younger siblings out of their home until the teen gets help. This still leaves the parent and a teen sibling in danger. It also punishes the innocent siblings and makes them move out instead of the aggressor. 
We were told if it happens again to call the police and have the teen arrested. So basically ignore the mental health issues and throw the teen in jail. And we were given no other suggestions of places to call, not even outpatient programs.
 
So my question is, is there such a thing as involuntary commitment for a teenager? 
Can we fill out a petition listing ways that they are a  significant danger to themselves and others, and try to get them committed ? Or is it different for teenagers than it is for adults? The teen has a history of mental illness and currently has some confusion , and has a history of violent unpredictable  rages that could hurt someone. In fact, an adult was injured in the past in one of the rampage. The chances of this happening again is very real. The teen is also not taking their antipsychotic medication.

We need to get this teen help, while  also protecting the siblings. Are there any types of emergency mental health programs?
 Does anyone have any suggestions? 
Or are there no options for intense help for this teen?
