Remix14: Cut copy -Going Nowhere (Sebastian Remix)

The Aussie synth band gets a chipped and filter remix with a little menace thrown in as only Sebastian can do.

Remix13: Alex Gopher Vs Joe Zas - Jojoba Wuz Remix

Nice little remix by Alex Gopher for Joe Zas on the little underdog of a label Pamplemousse who rarely strayed from their own artists. Never seen this for sale even second hand.

Remix09: Archive - You Make Me Feel (archive/arkchive remix)

Ark chops things up as he always does to great effect leaving the original trip hoppy track almost unrecognisable and turning it into a lovely relaxed chill out track. Archive were mid transition from Trip Hop to Rock and this troubled album was disowned by them due to their record labels mix on the album. A shame as the first album was pretty good with two great singles. Archive also had a joint EP along with guitar noodling French House act Rinocerose at the same time.

Remix09: The Whitest Boy Alive - Golden Cage (Fred Falke Remix)

I always see the Scandi House as a kind of spiritual successor to French House as it had its disco influences but could create a range of sounds and while not overly commercial or too severe in its purism. Lead singer of Whitest Boy Alive Erland Oye was kind of the dad of the sound helping it form so it's nice to see French House getting a direct link rather than me just moving from one scene to another and hoping there's a connection.

Falke turns a kind of ethereal slightly folk infused track and stretches it out for an indi disco of awkward men dancing with nervous women to an endless twilight of a Norwegian Summer. It's got that slight melancholy to end the night in a comfy armchair as you contemplate ending the dancing as your legs hurt.

Remix08: Alex Gopher - The Child (Wuz Mix)

Gopher I feel is unfairly sidelined in French House. He was there from the start did some great records, did his own thing with his mournful soul samples, had great videos, co-ran Solid did a few nice remixes of non French House Artists. He never seemed to like touring and went back into the studio to be a producer and engineer again.

The Child was a decent break out hit with it's text based video, great sample of Don't Explain by Nina Simone and heavy hitting endorsements by a resurgent Masters At Work doing a remix or two.

This is the Wuz mix by Gopher himself working with frequent collaborator Demon. It pushes it to a longer, squidgier more abstract dance track to great effect. At one point they just push the squidgy lever to maximum to get a great sound to book end the track.

Remix07: Dimitri From Paris - Une Very Stylish Fille (Sami Dee's Remix)

Cracking dancer remix of Dimitri's original that adds a extra length, some nice chunky drums and a woozy break down that I absolutely love as it swirls around.

Remix06: Shakedown - At Night Alan Braxe Mix

Personally this might be one of the best remixes by a French House artist. Taking a pretty damn good original by Swiss group Shakedown and Braxing it up to infinity. Pure disco bliss for 7 minutes. I can't believe it's almost 25 years old!

Freddy Fresh takes the track and throws on a big beat/breaks drum beat and pushes it from kids how house record to a big loud chugger. Perfect for a kids party when the parents are having a beer.

Probably needs no introduction. Excellent remix. My brother has the first 12" with rare cover. Well jelly.

Principles Of Geometry appeared late in French House's life and while definitely in the same racks and collaborated with Sebastian Tellier, remixed by Krikor, there links are a little tangential to class them as a true French House artist but certainly linked in the spider web of offshoots as the sound splintered. Check out their ARP mix tapes to hear Justice's Stress amazingly mixed into Donna Summers I Feel Love.

Thier sound is nicely electronic with call backs to 70s sound tracks and organic synth sounds a bit like Boards of Canada sometimes. They signed to Joakims Tiger Sushi that had a few links to other French House artists and similar sounds.

Though PoGs links to French House is a little precarious this Eat Remix moves it back to some spacey French House music for me. The low electronic growl and 2001/Tron style choral sounds giving way to a triptych of linked sections that evolve like a cosmic sci fi film. I can imagine Moebius designed space ships and pastel coloured astronauts floating about as the track ebbs and flows to its final ponderous ending as a stargate, streaming with light engulfs them. Pure bliss as a 12"record.

Air were never French House but certainly travelled along side and were well acquainted with French House artists. Alex Gopher master a few early tracks, Etienne De Cressy produced a few and had them on Super Discount, Cassius remixed Sexy Boy early on and Oizo, Modjo, Rob and Kris Menace with this all remix later on.

Using the Claude Francois Cette Annexe La sample to amazing effect the solo track stomps across a dance floor like a Colossus. Check out the same sample used by Euro Producer Michael Grey under the pseudonym The Rock on That Niger (one G like the country) that creates a more traditional and possibly simpler but still rocking track... which has the hard hitting slam poem Sha Clack Clack over it.

Probably the best Crydamoure release with it's heavy filter backbone with that effortless groove looping over the top to create a rolling upbeat but oddly mesmeric track. Samples disco midget Leo Sayer's track You Make Me Feel Like Dancing to great effect.

Oh yeah if anyone actually reads these I'll do back to the classics 40 (this was 39 but I fluffed the title as usual) then do some French House remixes...

So Face Ball 2000 is an alias of I:Cube which is an alias of Nicolas Chaix. The name comes from an old video game on the Gameboy and SNES that was a port of an Atari ST game called Midi Maze which used the midi port to connect computers for the first instance of death matches on a computer (apparently) I imagine Chaix can remember it from his early days as the ST was used by a lot audio engineers and producers.

The track is a nice bright and breezy piece with warm upbeat electronics sound like something from the early 80s or maybe even calling back further to Hot Butters Pop Corn.

Releasing on Benjamin Diamonds Diamond Traxx this odd piece of chopped up Whimsey might stray into Big Beat or French House. It's a playful poke in the eye to the more po faced filter tracks that dominated - a pill fueled romp through an imaginary show jumping event.

Gopher knocks it out the park on one of his final releases with an ace Tron inspired video to go along with it. I wonder if his space hopper would beat Ken Ishiis hover bike from Stretch?

Gopher did some songs on his album but this is the most like a pop song and less reliant on samples. That's no criticism and with his trade mark percussion and Peter Hook like bass lines this really does have the feel of New Orders True Faith. It sounds great popping up on Digitalisms DJ Kicks mix.

Officially down as an unknown artist but recognised to be Motorbass this promo on pretty mysterious SNIFF records has two great tracks. La B Combination uses Action 78 by Erotic Drum Band as it's bed, which was also released on the excellent Betty Botox - Rvng Of The Nerds EP as Voodoo 2. Great Vinyl that I got in bargain bin for 50p and have loved ever since. Check out the flip side of Dancing In The Cardinal's Dungeon for a more disco infused track.

An Englishman making French music? The horror! I think Les Voleurs were English as well as Digitalism being German.

Another very filter track on the Pamplamousse Productions label that often flew under the radar but stood out in the racks due to their great bold covers. Check out Jonny Fiasco for more like this.

Gilb'r and I:Cube combine their powers to make a big bold stomper of a track to really push your bass bins, if I needed a soundtrack to demolishing an alien city in my giant robot suit, this would be it. Came out in 2011 so we'll after French House has peaked and probably passed but it still keeps the flame alive.
